Cheng-Yue Chang | 张震岳

About

Hi. I'm Yuebo.

This is a imaginery concert that I really wish to happen in the future.

Chang, Cheng-Yue(张震岳) is one of my fav pop rock singers from Taiwan. He had a tour concert in the US back in 2004 called "Kill Kitty Tour". He is one of those with strong personalities and personal styles. Wearing a cap is one of his signatures, so I want to incorporate that element in the poster design. The following concepts are inspired by what read from one of his interviews, which let me understand more about him and his music.

Some quotes from the interview:

"Simple is not easy to achieve. Compare to complicated music which you achieve with fancy composition, simple music can reveal more about the singer's mood, voice and personality. I like this feeling: imperfection, just like I am whisper singing to your ears."

"I want to convey mild, slow feelings to people. You can just do your stuff while listening to the music wihtout feeling disturbing. It's light, without pressure, just like behind your ears. If you listen carefully, you can feel an upsurge of emotion."

The general tone is towards simple and slow. Yet it can be achieved through minimal design or complex design using contrast to achieve the purpose.

_CONCEPT_1

"what i want to say is in my songs, so I don't talk much on the stage. No eye contact. I prefer that kind of lonliness on the stage."

So I think of a poster with his song list piled up where he sit on top of the pile alone.

_CONCEPT_2

"I don't like the feeling of being in the center of the stage, where clappings are the only things you will get. I'd like to be at the back or side of the stage. Your view is different."

This quick sketch has a spot light on the center of the stage while he sit on the edge of the stage. I am also thinking of experimenting with different view angle, like bird's eye view from the top.

_CONCEPT_3

One of his visual identities or signatures is definitely his caps. He always wears a hat either on and off stage. And he changes his caps pretty frequently. So I want to collect the caps he has weared before. I want to somehow put some movement to the cap, maybe different poses, to convey moods and emotions and personalities: different sides of him on the stage. The challenge for me right now is how to build a connection between the display of caps with a concert and reveal his identity.

Sketch Round Two

Reinforced by his quotes:

1. "I don't like the feeling of being in the center of the stage, where clappings are the only things you will get. I'd like to be at the back or side of the stage. Your view is different. Even there are someone else play the guitar while I just sit at the edge and sing."

2. "I want to convey mild, slow feelings to people. You can just do your stuff while listening to the music wihtout feeling disturbing. It's light, without pressure, just like behind your ears. However, if you listen carefully, you can also feel an upsurge of emotion."

Design

The type I use are hollow, where I fill in the sea wave background with some splashes. The types are hand-written, loose, long and lean to convey slowness. The sea wave will be conveying that the songs are seemingly slow but if you dig, your emotions will be sturred. The content is the list of songs he is going to sing in the concert.

There are spot lights, a microphone, and a cap on the stage, where the spot light is not on the cap and microphone.
