Character Design

Character Design - student project

This project was really interesting to make, and I had a lot of fun too!

First, I decided to pick two words at random and use it as my base for designing my character. The words I ended up working with were 'ship' and 'braid'.

I was really intrigued by the word 'ship' in particular, because I felt that it could potentially lead to a very interesting and unique design, so this is the part that I focused on the most.

I choose the most obvious occupation for my character and made him a pirate captain. As for the shapes, I looked up ship references and found a lot of triangles and angular shapes in most ship designs, so I tried to use the same sort of shapes for my own design.

So with those four concepts in mind, I started sketching a bunch of different ideas:

Out of everything I imagined, there were a few elements that I really liked and decided to put in my final design. The elements I kept are: A cape with multiple layers to represent a ship's sails, a haircut that extends like a prow, a rope around his waist for the braid part, a shield shaped like a wheel and a weapon like an anchor.

Above is my final design as well as its silhouette. Although it's definitely not perfect, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out in the end.

The whole process was really rewarding for me. Trying to figure out how to make a character from inanimate objects was a really interesting exercice that I had a lot of fun doing!
