Chandler watches shark porn!

** MOST RECENT UPDATES AT THE BOTTOM**

I began by thinking of quotes/lyrics that I thought were meaningful to me, the first being on of my all time favourites from my favourite book, but I decided to go in a completely different route and choose a quote from Friends that cracks me up no matter how many times I watch it.

"CHANDLER WATCHES SHARK PORN" I feel the possibilites for ideas are endless with this quote.

I got a bit carried away with my notes (apologies that it's a bit all over the place)

I haven't decided on what I want the design to be used on. I like the idea of gift tags as seen in my mood board, but I think I'm going to make the design a poster to hang on my wall - I also know a lot of people who may like a print as a little gift, which is good with christmas coming up.

LETTERING WARM UP:

Here are some plans in preparation for the lettering exercises. I thought I'd put them in just to see how all over the place my ideas were at the start. I also have to plan everything I do first, even something like just drawing a word, otherwise I just don't feel confident with how it looks.

I have a lot more plans that I have done, but they're a bit repetitive and some I can't even work out what I was getting at so I left them out haha. I struggled a lot trying to get to grips with doing the blacklettering font (hense why I scribbled this one out here) I also struggled with ideas of putting 'shark' into a shape since I had an idea of using a mouth as the initial shape - I ended up leaving this idea completely (or at least until I get a better idea for it)

-----------------------------

I am quite happy with the first set of fonts, some I think are a bit messy and the proportions are a bit uneven, but other than that I think it definitely has helped me in regard to ideas for the next stages. The one letters floating all over the place are ideas I had but didn't actually finish - I'll probably do them fully on a new sheet.. maybe. I still have loads of font ideas but I wanted this sheet to show the variety of styles from serif, sans serif, to more decorative and ornate ideas I've had.

-----------------------------

A couple more lettering warm ups. I didn't want to be beaten by the blackletting so after asking Mary Kate for some help, I took her advice of taping together two pencils so I can get the correct contrast between the bold and thin lines, which worked perfectly. I also completed one of the fonts that I did just the 'S' on the first page. Even though it's only small in comparison to the other experimental pieces, I actually enjoyed doing the on a curve dimensional type, especially now I'm starting to get the hang of drawing the drop shadows better.

-----------------------------

I have taken a font from my first sheet and edited it towards the comments regarding adding accents that resemble shark fins, which I think work really well actually. I decided to draw over the design in fineliner so I could get a look into what it would look like with crisper lines.

There's been a lack of progress recently as I've started back at university, so as much as I'd rather spend my time doing this project, I have to be sensible haha. But I have however started working in the way I've learnt during this project in my uni work which I think is helping me a lot there!

I think I'm going to move on to creating some thumbnails now I have a good idea of the range of fonts available which should be very exciting!

-----------------------------

THUMBNAILS:

I seem to be on quite a roll with these thumbnails, so much so I think I'm going a bit overboard.....

I have so so so many ideas it's going to be hard for me to choose one to stick with. I'm going to go on and choose a couple of my favourites (recommendations?) and take them a little further in hope it'll help me choose a final design to finish through to the end piece :D

-----------------------------

Sorry about the massive delay in progress, I ended up with tonsillitis and it's taken me longer than I wanted to get over it :(

BUT I am back for now, yay.

I chose three thumbnails to progress with a bit more, they're still very rough but they give an idea of what I'm going for. I always make everything really scruffy at first and with each time I redo the design they get neater, so eventually they will look better! (and won't have my terrible handwriting all over it)

Idea 1:

(you see what I mean about how scruffy my designs initially are? hahah apologies again)

What needs to be altered the most here is to have all the type centered more as there is a lot more negative space on the right, spreading this out equally I think will make it look a lot better. I like the addition of the shark although I'm unsure as to wether he looks out of place what with the border. I am happy with the variation in type I've used though, a lot of them going back to my type warm ups.

Idea 2:

This design is definitely the busiest out of all three I did. (excuse some lines being lighter, my scanner obviously didn't want those areas to stand out as much as they do on page) Again although it's messy, I really like this piece and think once it's neatened up a fair amount it could have a lot of potential, partically because I like the border. What do you guys think? :)

Idea 3:

Again, here I wanted to experiment with some of the type warm ups I did. The 'shark' is extremely out of proportion but I wasn't sure how I wanted it at first so it was initially just a test to see if it fitted the overall composition.

I'd appreciate any feedback (good or bad) that you guys might have as I'm unsure which design I want to do finally. I definitely think I want to redraw all three just to make them neater (I really do apologise about that) so that might help make a decision.

-----------------------------

Out of the three designs above, I chose the first 2 to progress with a little more. By that I mean I tidied them up a bit so I could get a clearer idea of what the design would look like.

#1

This design I wasn't feeling at all once I started it, I was constantly feeling like bits were missing. I started with just the type, then I added the swirls, which I then made more pointed to represent teeth. I still felt like it was missing something so I added the border, I have only half rope as I couldn't decide if I wanted a rope banner, or just a standard line. I then felt that with the accent in the top right, the bottom left was a bit neglected so added a little shark. I might just need to play around with different compositions and type choices but for now I'm not too happy with this design.

#2

This design however, I was liking a lot more. The arched type still needs refining a lot more but I like the overall feel of this piece. Again, I feel like there's something missing from the design, but I'm unsure what that is. Other than that I like it a lot, particualrly the banner.

Thoughts? :)

-----------------------------

I'm pretty happy with the layout I have going on in design #2 however the type I have chosen is something that's really bothering me so I'm kind of going back to do some more experimental type pieces that I could possibly use in position of the existing ones (they're also going to be a lot neater)

(Ignore some of the lines that didn't scan in so well, they're some guidelines for myself) There is still more detail that needs to go into this idea, but this is just a quick mock up so I can get an idea towards the composition :)

Also, won't be updating for a while since I'm on a trip with university to Prague. Maybe some insperation will spark while I'm there :D
