Carnival Queen!

Carnival Queen! - student project

Hi guys! I'm Natasha, and I'm from Brazil!

We're in the middle of a long holiday called Carnival where people dress up with feathers, sequins, and lots of shiny costumes, and it is a big party! So as inspiration, I decided to draw and ink a beautiful Drum Queen! It's a woman that dances in front of the drums section of a big Samba School Parade!

So here is where I started:  (forgive my terrible shots)

Carnival Queen! - image 1 - student project

Sketched on my sketchbook. Didn't  scan or retrace, I wanted to work directly on the book. I'm just studying so my mistakes are good learning opportunities.

Then, I inked it keeping in mind not to trace it, but trying to keep the lines alive. I focused on 6 textures: feathers, metal, gems, hair, mini chains and a cloth part (arms, but that one I cheated.)

I used a sponge on that part. The metal I found difficult, I'm trying to learn more. I'm also kinda wobbly with lines andterrible with proportions and hands and feet drawing. Any classes on drawing you can recomend? :)

In the end I tried to use splatter to simulate confetti, but it turned out dirty and messy. I need to research a bit more on that.

That ink is drawing ink from Talens. There are parts of the drawing inked with the Tombow Dual brush, the brush side.

Thank you for reading! Leave your comments on how I can improve! Thank you Yuko Shimizu for teaching how to be bold with ink!
