Can't Go Wrong With a Harry Potter Quote

I know I'm a little late to the game here, but I thought I would go ahead and share my project regardless.

I've been wanting to get better at lettering for a while now but I haven't been able to pursue it as much as I would have liked because my final semesters at college got in the way. However, when I was able to I would sneak in some lettering into my projects. In my Printmaking II class I chose my favorite Harry Potter quote to turn into a drypoint. It wasn't a terrible design, but I admit it could have been a lot better.

I never could pinpoint what was wrong with this project, but it never looked quite right to me. Then I realized once I took this course, I didn't base it on the grid. The slant is wonky and the x-height of the letters is uneven. I thought I would tackle this quote again and redo it based on the things I learned in this course.

My First Attempt Was a Flop

Time to Try Again
The first thing I did was to tape a gridded paper to my desk with the proper heights lined out and the slant lines drawn. Then I took tracing paper and taped it on top of the gridded paper and drew out the parts of the composition.

Refining the Design

Once I was happy with that, I put it all together. With each piece of tracing paper I refined the piece more and once I felt it looked good enough, I scanned it in and vectored it in Illustrator.

Adding Some Style

Next, I took the vector into Photoshop and applied the color, texture, and extras to it to give it life.

Here is a close up of the light area:

Any feedback is welcome. I am really happy with the project so far and I think it looks a lot better than my first attempt at this quote. I am so grateful for the knowledge I have gained through this course and am excited to do more lettering.
