I've always been a diehard fan of the 1950s and often try to mimick its simplicity and clean imagery, but moreso in design and type, rather than illustration.  I usually pull vintage reference from old logos, packaging, advertisings and signage, but this is my first time working with the space race.

I compiled my inspritation on Pinterest, which can be found on my board here.  I took a closer look at two artists who I admire, as the modern work of Shag clearly encompasses this Retro Future style, while the color palletes of Mary Blair caputure the time period perfectly.

I did my sketches in Adobe Ideas on my iPad.  Its an incredible app that allows the use of layers and can be imported directly into Illustrator where the paths are editable in full vector.  As someone who has never used a tradition tablet, I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for something portable.  Digital or on paper, I like to add color to my sketches just to get an idea out of the gate.  Its just personal preference and helps me see the final picture sooner compared to a black and white sketch.  Looking back on it, I have no idea why I drew food, other than to try to work with color without black boundaries.

While my sketchdump doesn't show it, I've selected Boston as my focus based on my close ties with the city.  After living here for four years and now working here, I'm looking forward to seeing what I can create to honor the city while be set in a futuristic space setting.
