Boosting your productivity with a Pen Tablet

Digital painting, designing, photo-retouching or animating are huge challenges for artists, and for anybody who works with a standard computer mouse it can be even more complicated than it has to be.

In this class I will show how you as a creative person can improve your productivity and boost your efficiency when it comes to your work - with a pen tablet!

I will present the three major types of tablets and describe my workflow with each of them, as well as useful tipps and tricks for your daily work routine if you are a professional and starter tips for those of you, who are just getting into working with a pen tablet.

The three tablets I'm going to use are:

- Wacom Intuos Pro M (My go to tablet)

- Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 13

- Wacom Cintiq Pro 13

I'm using Wacom products not because I specifically want to advertise them, but simply because I want to show you what I use on a day-to-day basis in an authentic way. I will thoughout the class present alternative products!

Class Outline (updated March 31st!)

Class Project:

The last video of the class is a timelapse of me doing a quick self-portrait in a cartoony style on my tablet in Adobe Photoshop. You are very much invited to practice on your tablet, creating a character design of yourself! You can include your pet, like I did, if you want to.

Focus on:

  • Customizing your settings throughout the whole process, changing things up until they fit your workflow
  • Using your tablet buttons and pen to navigate quickly, pick up colours and resize your brush
  • If you have a huge display tablet, work zoomed out, don't get lost in details, and move your shoulder and arm while sketching, rather than working from your wrist a lot
  • Try different angles of your tablet on your desk until you are comfortable
  • Unplug you computermouse! Force yourself to really get used to the pen.
  • It shouldn't take longer than 1h to complete your coloured sketch :)

I'm very excited to see your sketches and even more to hear about your experiences with the tablet.

Requirements:

A pen tablet! But if you are just thinking about purchasing a tablet, this class might still be for you, since it might help you decide which one is for you.

It does not matter if you are a beginner or intermediate artist, if you mostly paint or draw - the information provided in this class can be applied to many types of software and various ways to use them.

I am an artist myself, so this class is focused on digital art and painting, so it’s perfect for concept artists, comic- or manga artists, character designers and illustrators.

Aaaaaand it's DONE! Thank you all for the feedback and help!
