Whew! So this lesson was much needed. I honestly am not sure which method I'm using. I've been using a finance management template I downloaded to keep track of my freelance income and expenses. So far, it's worked pretty well except I haven't quite found a balance between budgeting for taxes and paying myself. I also donate a portion of profits, so adding that into the equation has been a challenge. How have others managed this?

One thing I'd like to check off the list soon is opening a business account to separate personal and business expenses.

In terms of categories, there are a few that most of my transactions fall under – marketing (business cards, promo materials, etc.), software subscriptions, taxes, charity donations, and professional development.
