Book Maps

I travel and walk a lot and whenever I'm on the move, I'm either reading a book or listening to an audiobook. I want to make a very personal "reading map" showing where I was when I read particular books

Essentially, I'm considering interesting ways to represent my travels beyond the standard marker-and-line maps.

Why am I making this map?
I'm a web developer who actually makes his living making digital maps. Having found my way to maps from the web side, I've become interested in the location and geography side. I also travel quite a lot and wanted an interesting way to represent my travels beyond the standard marker-and-line maps. Whenever I'm travelling or simply walking about, I read a lot and I'm looking at using this as part of my visualisation. I want to make a very personal "reading map" showing where I was when I read particular books.

Why am I the expert to create this map?
This is my personal reading list from the last year mapped out.

Who is my target audience?
Just myself. The locations associated with my 'Book Maps' don't really have particular relevance to the book or anyone else.

What level of detail do I need to include?
This could vary. For some sections of a book, I have very specific memories of where I was when I read them, for others, there's just a general area.

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?
Currently undecided. As I make digital maps every day, it might be interesting to make a printed one. On the other hand, I am constantly travelling and reading so a digital one would be maintainable in the future.

Hand-drawn Maps

To try out hand-drawing maps, I decided to draw my old neighbourhood from memory. From the number of gaps, I'd say there are quite a few buildings I've never actually looked at.

I also decided to try something kind of around my main project idea and mapped out the family's Sunday afternoon walk...

Challenges so far

I'm really struggling to not be absolutely exact in my drawings. I actually have to work at making it approximate because my natural tendency would be to create an exact scale replica.
