Bizarre Bazaars

First of all...I'm (very) late. I could use the excuse that I'm in India and everyone is always late for everything, but well, the truth is that I've just been busy...busy exploring the city that I've called home for the past 4 years: Delhi. Delhi is a crazy, chaotic place which assalts the senses and over-stimulates the brain - which is exactly what I love about it. After 4 years, I'm still discovering....(and I believe even after another 4 years, I would still be doing the same)

So, my map....

With so much to offer, this city can be overwhelming. Tourists and expats alike often get cornered into what is familiar and what seems easier or what they've been recommended by someone else. Locals as well grow up with their preconceived notions of what is good and safe and cheap and easy and convenient and acceptable and right around the corner. But the city is vast, and each corner, each pocket can offer something different. So what I want to do is take the most essential centers of the city - the markets - and demystify them a bit - pointing out the specialities of each.

Also, each market around the city has a seemingly different day when it is "closed" for business, but people never seem to know which day of the week it is for any given market. Actually, there is a little-known "rule" for understanding when markets are closed or open, depending on their location in the city. I plan to include this visually on my map as a guideline for shoppers and explorers alike.

  1. Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? a gift? To showcase my favorite places? Mainly for fun and to showcase a few simple facts about the city - but also to share with friends/family that comes to visit us in Delhi.

  2. Why am I the expert to create this map? Because I love the city I live in.

  3. Who is my target audience? Anyone who wants to see it - for now, me and my boyfriend ;)

  4. What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding etc.). Names of markets, geographical locations (in relation to others), perhaps closest metro stations/transportation options, color coding for days off by location, basic specialites of each market (maybe with symbols) and/or a few key stores/food places in each market

  5. Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is it going to be used/ held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note: type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web). Printed - either as a single A4 sheet which can be folded - or as a small, hand-held book

  6. “Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....” Well, my digital skills (photoshop and such) are very weak, but let's see what I can sort out! Also, maybe knowing what details would be most interesting to include for each market.
