I live in Birmingham, AL and we have many cute plant stores. Since I love drawing flowers and plants and I personally know 3 people that have plant/flower shops... that's how I got my idea.
I did some mark making experiments but I decided on just painting with ink. I layered some tracing paper to play with adding line but ultimately decided against it.
My reference photos are from their instagram accounts (top left: @botanica_bhm, top right: @house.plant.collective, bottom left: magiccityflowermarket, & bottom right: @shoppebham)
I probably should have done more thumbnailing planning out values but I was just anxious to paint, ha.
I started with Magic City Flower Market - Sarah the owner sources locally grown flowers for her shop (Bham is nicknamed The Magic City - has to do with our city having all the components to making steel naturally and then how fast it grew bc of steel production).
While that was drying I worked on Botanica (the owner, Caitlin is the nicest person and a true plant whisperer... also a physician's assistant!)
The next day I started on Houseplant Collective - the owner is my neighbor and she's converted an old school bus into a mobile plant store! I didn't include her cute dog bc I'm not confident in minimal pet portraits, ha.
Finally the one I'm least thrilled about but whatever is Shoppe. This store is gorgeous and all of their photos on instagram are filled so it was hard choosing something that had some breathing room. They're known for their greenhouse that you can rent out btw for special events. I die. I tried to create some atmospheric depth with this one.
