Bird by Bird

Photography apps were my way in to photo bashing, manipulating, and processing in a way I hadn't just thought of to do in Photoshop. This class gave me extra tools, it set me off to create pattern after pattern in Photoshop and on my iPad. So, thanks, Chuck, for the extra push.

A few years ago we went berry picking and caught in the netting above the blueberry bushes was a dead bird. The photo I took was forgotten amidst a hundred others on one of my hard drives. But this class pushed me to delve in to my older material and there I found some perfect photo manipulation material in the shape of this darling.

Since this photo was orginally shot in RAW on a DSLR, I manipulated everythig in Photoshop. I drained its saturation and left it colourless, mirrored it, set the layer to multiply, added extra contrast to the top layer, and cropped it.

Here are some of my other experiments.

But most of all this class gave me the tools to transform a lot of my scanned in textures and collages in to some pretty awesome base materials for the digital collages I lay over my ink illustrations. That's how I was finally able to finish this Illustration.

Original Illustration.

Layered and digitally coloured with these collages.
