Because it's time: serabishop.com

The project of creating serabishop.com from scratch: BEGINS.

Written 4/2/2013

"In 2008, when the economy was CRAP, I had the honor of graduating. I immediately went from being a recent grad :WAHOO!!!: to immediately being un- (and then severely under-) employed. DOH.

Welcome to the real world? NO WAY.

In my desperate attempts to figure out what to do with myself, I began a brand without even realizing it. This is the story of how my online presence evolved from nada to what it is today.

Hi. My name is Sera, and I'm a Virtual Assistant + Happiness Specialist. (Yes, really.) I can't wait to share my story with you."

---------

4/5/2013 - Unit 1: Mission accomplished. I got HTML & HTTP mixed up on the quiz. OOPS.

---------

4/10/2013 - After an exhausting day, I pushed through Unit 2. The below image is my current homepage!!! Bare minimum, but it's up there. I've kept the original hello.html page, and created an about.html as well. I know they should all link to each other instead of having to hit the back button... but we'll get there.

Links included:

  • Skillshare (Umm, yes I will promote for you while I build my website through a class you're offering!!!)
  • Twitter @serabishop
  • Blog (which will of course be merging onto the site!)
  • #NaPoWriMo - because it is National Poetry Writing Month after all.
  • ---------

    ---------

Then there's the placeholder for the about me page:

    ---------

    ---------

and my hello page - which may be transformed into something else eventually...

    ---------

    ---------

And the coolest part so far?

    ---------

TABS CUSTOMIZED!!! (It's those small things that make you smile that matter, remember?)

I tried to customize the picture that's on the tab but got ahead of myself. And yes, I know my face is everywhere, but isn't that all part of the brand? I promise to have more interesting content in the future... you'll just have to stay tuned.

I've been reading/working with HTML for quite a few years now, and while I can learn/figure it out pretty quickly, a clean slate seems to empty my brain as well (nevermind the 13 hour day...).

WHAT I'VE LEARNED SO FAR (besides what the above demonstrates):

  • I know a lot of old-school HTML that doesn't fly by the new HTML 5 rules. OH.
  • As stated above, I can read HTML better than I can create it from scratch. FOR NOW.
  • A blank-slate website sure asks for a  lot of copy, content and design to be in order!
  • Patience is still a virtue.
  • My next QUESTION:

  • When does Wordpress come into play??!? :)
  • I had some more specifics about certain HTML, but I'm going to leave it at that. While I can edit pre-existing HTML better than I can create it at this point, I am stoke to be learning it in a coherent manner.

Last thought: (Oh, and I did create a FB page... remaining unpublished for the moment though!) :)

    4/16/2013

Added some content to the about me page. Messed around with the color (need to figure out my color scheme!!!).

Wanting to learn buttons to link to pages (instead of links). Want to format text for links. Not sure how to do this.

Took a day long workshop today to write copy. I'm BEAT. More next time.

    4/20 -

Kind of disappointed I didn't upload some more pics of the site pre-wordpress before it was overwritten. Kind of proud of what I did from scratch.

Wordpress installed yesterday and reinstalled today because I was messing with my files in Cyberduck. Oops. Have to learn not to get ahead of myself!

Here's what we got after an evening of playing and evaluating THE DOM...

I installed a few different themes thinking I liked them, but then went back to WP 2011. Went in and made some custom edits to the theme - and while I know that makes it difficult to update the theme when updates are available, I'm going to go with it now. Not a fan of the size of the header, or space before the menu. Also wish their was a right sidebar on all the pages not just the blog page.

BUT WE'VE GOT COLOR PEOPLE! I also haven't had a chance to read through/watch any of the 5000 resources in Unit 5. I wanted to play first. That's up next.

I'm loving the process, but it keeps me up at night. I also really like coding from scratch. Time for bed.
