I started with gin because it's refreshing and complex. With that in mind I looked throughout the house for inspiration. I decided to make an infused simple syrup but otherwise stay with a simple 3 ingredient concoction.
THE BASIL SOUR
2 oz Gin
3/4 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 oz Basil-Lemon Simple Syrup
(Mix 1c sugar with 1 cup water in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add 5-7 fresh basil leaves (chopped) and the zest of 1/2 Lemon. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Let sit for 30 minutes and then strain. Let the syrup cool before using.)
Cucumber slices and basil leaf for Garnish
Put all ingredients into a shaker and add ice.
Shake until very cold (15-20 seconds)
Strain into chilled coup or rocks glass.
Garnish with cucumber slice and basil leaf.
I really like the way this drink came out. I was worried about making the basil component sweet but it works great. Plus the fragrance is incredible. This would work great as a pre-dinner drink because the savory elements increases my appetite. I may try it with some club soda to lighten it up a bit and maybe a pinch of salt.
