Andrew Bird - Sasquatch Festival

Artist: Andrew Bird

Venue/Theme: Sasquatch Festival, Gorge Theater, Washington State

I had a really hard time finding a concept I liked for supporting the concert location, then after doing more research, I learned that he's performing as a part of the Sasquatch Festival. Now, that's something more fun/visual I can latch on to.

Here are 3 different thumbnails for concepts:

1st: Scenery represents Coumbia River with mountains and pine trees that spell out "ANDREW", with a bird on a log floating down the river. I like this concept, but it's not as strong as the others, and I think it will run into problems in the comping stage with readability.

2nd: A cartoony Sasquatch with pine trees in the background. The Sasquatch is a falconer (nod to local wildlife), but a sock monkey is the falcon. (He always has his sock monkey on stage with him when he performs)

3rd: Sasquatch in its lengendary stride through a forest of birch trees (nod to local flora). This is my favorite: Very graphical and subtle, and I think it will work great in a limited palette with a very graphic style.

Comping Stage:

I wanted to start very stark and graphic to support the natural style of the birch tree, using cool and contrasting colors (purple shadows and yellow-green background) along with the black and white.

Here are some examples of styles that I'm shooting for. I like the contrasting colors of the orange and green, but the style will not be as cartoony. I may add in some texture later like the examples in row 2.

And here's what I have so far. I just started putting the text in… fonts and layout may change. I just wanted to get the masking out effect going first. Next will be adding in Sasquatch and possibly some texture.

I added Sasquatch, and tweaked the colors. I'm still not set on the colors yet. Also still working on the typography.

Final poster – I'm fairly happy with the way it turned out. Adding the texture and using muted colors definitely helped it feel more like Andrew Bird.
