And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free

May 5th, 2014:

I had a difficult time thinking of a good quote to use for this project, until I remembered that I saw Wicked less than a month ago. I searched for quotes and discovered, "And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free." Being a college graduate soon, I thought this was perfect in describing the journey that's to come with becoming a working adult.

Below is my word map in response to the quote I've chosen.

My reference images reflect the idea of travel and include vintage road signs, passport, stamps, travel tickets, etc. Other misc. images such as the "moving forward" type illustration and the feather-drawn 'F' caught my eye as they fit with other words in my word map.

Flying was my word of choice for the next step. I experimented with script, blackletter, representational, sans serif and in a shape. It was fun trying to incorporate my inspiration materials into the drawings. Of all of these, I personally like the script, representational and shape drawings. The script one is pretty simple, it mimics the ascending quality of the "moving forward" image. I tried a feathery, whimsical approach with the representational style. Lastly, it was fun drawing 'flying' in the shape of a feather. It's a little dimensional at the same time, which adds some dynamic.
