Alberta Pennant

MY CITY
I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada!

I hand-lettered Calgary for Isabel Urbina Peña's class, so I'm torn on whether to letter Calgary again, pennant-style for this class or letter Alberta instead...

I'm leaning towards lettering Alberta because I want to include a mountain illustration and the mountains aren't technically in Calgary, though we're lucky to have a distant view of them out in the horizon.

UPDATE: I decided to go with Alberta. Once I started sketching, Alberta just felt right. :)

I especially love UPPERCASE magazine's pennant (top left). You can see these Pins on my board Typography & Hand-Lettering.

MY FAVOURITE OXFORD PENNANT

This is my favourite Oxford Pennant! I love the black on white. It's simple, bold, and I initially thought it was a hot dog, then a rolling pin. Now I'm assuming it's a baton?

MY CUSTOM CREATED TEXTURES
I've been taking pictures of cool textures in my daily life for a while, but never knew how to make them into textures I could layer over my lettering. Here are the photos I turned into textures with Photoshop:

This is a picture I took in a park in Calgary. I thought it'd be nice to make textures for the word 'Alberta' from photos I took in the province. :)

Texture made using the Noise + Gausian Blur filters

These three textures were made from photos using a mixture of the Threshold technique and the Noise + Gausian Blur filters:

This texture was made from a photo of bathwater that had a glittery bathbomb in it!

This texture was made from a photo of clouds from an airplane window - not sure how it will layer on top of lettering but we'll see! Parts of it might work well.

From a picture of leaves fallen on concrete that I took last fall. The actual leaf shapes might be interesting as cut outs in letterforms...

And here are the textures I created with Illustrator:

In these two colour options, I've used the prominent colours on Alberta's flag.

Here's the texture on a third colour option (the royal blue of Alberta's flag and the pink of the Alberta rose). I ended up using the bark texture + the one made from a photo of glittery bathwater. I really like that the texture I added ended up looking like snow over the mountains.

FINAL PENNANT

This is my final pennant design with the texture, mocked up in Photoshop! I couldn't resist the pink and blue together. The colours are a nod to Alberta's flag and the Alberta rose.

Thanks for the fun class, Jon!
