Ahh, calligraphy and Spotify...

DAY ONE: September 25, 2013

Just began the lesson a little bit ago. Already in love with this class. Going to get a few pages of practice in, then I'll be sure to post photos. So excited to see everyone's progress, especially my own! I'm so happy to finally be learning calligraphy and from a seriously talented lady, no less! :)

So here are a few pages of practice so far! I'm feeling pretty good so far. I have a hard time keeping everything in a straight line, so I'm working on that. I also did a little bit of each shape for now, and am going to go back to the / mark and start over. I think doing the other shapes is helping me to understand the shapes before it better. I plan on going through each shape a few times on full sheets of paper.

I've also noticed that slowing down and really focusing on each shape while referencing the others before it really helps me to keep consistency. So I'm going to keep working on that and trying to remember to go even slower than I already do.

I think I may have been pushing too hard when pulling downward, but I'm not sure. I'm definitely going to go back and work on the / mark more, but I wanted to see how the other shapes would turn out. **Also, don't mind my name... I wanted to write it to see what I could accomplish now without really any prior skill and compare it to my name later after I've practiced a lot.

I feel pretty comfortable with the U shape. Again, I have a hard time keeping a straight line, so that's something I definitely need to work on, but overall it's one of two I feel most comfortable doing so far.

I actually did a full page of the sideways S shape, unlike the first two (though I plan to go back to work on those and the others). I felt fairly comfortable doing this.. it's the second shape I feel comfortable with so far.

I'm having a somewhat difficult time with the O shape. Keeping a consistent distance within the O is hard. Also having a hard time where the start/finish connect. Currently working on the full page of the O shape, then I will go back and start over again at the / shape and do full pages again.

DAY TWO: September 27, 2013

Worked on the a-n lowercase alphabet for a little bit today. Here is my work:

My first attempt with no grid underneath. The top and 3rd lines are tracing the template, the 2nd and 4th lines (and the extra bits) are freehand.

This is each of the letters separately. The top of the picture was using the template, and all the rest was just freehand.

My favorite page. As you can see, I used a grid underneath to keep my lines straight and it helped SO MUCH. I loved having it there and think it makes the page look so much nicer and cleaner. These are all freehand attempts while just looking at the template (not tracing it) for the first couple attempts then from memory for the rest. I really like how these turned out, although the 2nd to last attempt got a little funky.

Some of the weird marks within the letters are from when the ink ran out and I had to restart at the point where I left off. It's a little awkward for me to do that, so I'm still working on it. My ink seemed to run out sooner than before, I think because of the size and complexity of the letteres compared to the shapes prior, so that's another thing to get used to. Overall, it's going well so far. I'll work on the second half of the alphabet later. I'm having a lot of fun!
