Against The Door

INT. HOSPITAL - PATIENT ROOM

A WOMAN (30’s) has her head buried in her hands. A DOCTOR, (50's) speaks inaudibly while jotting down notes on his clipboard.

The Woman lifts her head concentrating. She inhales, then slowly exhales. The Doctor’s voice fades in.

DOCTOR - ...and no smoking. You mayexperience sexual urges due to an increase in estrogen levels, but please, no intercourse.

The Doctor places a hand on her shoulder. She snaps out of it making eye contact.

DOCTOR - There’s nothing to worry about.

She gives him a wry smile. He returns to his clipboard scribbling on various forms as he makes approaches the door.

DOCTOR - Just remember to schedule an appointment with ladies outside for your follow-up. I’ll see you in a couple weeks EMMA.

The Doctor exits.

Emma sits on the edge of the bed contemplating. A slight breeze blows the hospital gown. The door slams.

INT. LIVING ROOM - EVENING

PAUL (30’s) arrives home with shopping bags.

PAUl - Em?

No answer.

He sets down the bags near the dining table.

PAUL - Emma?

EMMA - That was mine!

PAUL - Can you help me now?

Emma shares a disgrunteld look.

PAUL - Get dressed.

Paul leaves.

INT. HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER

Paul enters the house holding the box on one end and Emma (wearing sweats and shirt) following on the other. She trips over the door frame.

The box crashes into the floor causing something to break internally.

Paul shows his agitation.

Emma - I tripped.

Paul tends to the box.

INT. - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Crib directions lie atop the opened box. PAUL concentrates on screwing in a bolt. Emma sneaks behind him.

Emma - Boo!

Paul’s bones shiver. The screw comes off and goes missing. Emma laughs hysterically.

PAUL - You’ve got be joking, right?

EMMA (straight face) - Do you see me joking?

Paul starts searching for the screw. Emma snickers.

EMMA - I have an idea.

Emma approaches him as he searches the corners of the room.

EMMA - I’ll pitch.

She slaps his ass. Paul becomes erect and faces her.

EMMA - And you receive.

PAUL - What the fuck is wrong with you?

She’s startled. Silence.

PAUL - First, you start smoking.

Emma is pressed against a wall with Paul towering over her but nothing escapes from her mouth.

PAUL - Answer me!

She's spooked. No answer.

PAUL - Child.

Paul turns his back and resumes his hunt for the missing screw.

Emma's brows furrow.

She leaps onto his back. Her weight brings him to the ground. Now, flat on his stomach, Emma wildly swings her fists at him.

He protects his neck and head. Emm continues, blow after blow until Paul rolls her over. He's on top and she's underneath with her back against the floor.

He grabs a hold of her arms and pins them to the floor.

Paul - Stop!

Their blood pumping, eye stare each other down.

Emma hocks a loogie at his face...

Paul cocks his hand back...

EMMA - I’m sorry.

A tears fall her from eyes. Then another. And. Another.

Shortly, water gushes from her eyes like a waterfall. Emma slips away heading to their bedroom.

Paul slumps down into a seated position watching her. The door closes.

PAUL - Em?

He wiggles the knob.

PAUL - Open the door Em.

Emma slides down to floor shaking her head.

INT. HALLWAY - DOOR - CONTINUOUS

He stands in the hallway, forehead touching the door, and a hand on the knob.

PAUL - Emma?

Nothing.

Paul takes a deep breath and knocks with his head.

PAUL - Emma open the door.

EMMA (O.S.) - No.

PAUL - Why not?

EMMA - ‘Cause I don’t want to.

PAUL - ‘Cause I don’t want to.

Paul grunts and wiggles the door ferociously.

PAUL - Open the god damn door!

He kicks the door.

PAUL - EMMA!!!!

A flock of birds flee a nearby tree.

INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

EMMA (O.S.) - Yes?

PAUL - Open the door.

He headbutts it, then grabs a hold of his noggin.

EMMA (O.S.) - Are you okay?

PAUL - No.

EMMA (O.S.) - That’s good.

Paul rolls his eyes.

PAUL - God, you act like a...

EMMA (O.S.) - Like what?

He doesn’t say anything.

EMMA (O.S.) - What do I act like Paul?

He mimics her, still holding his forehead.

EMMA (O.S.) - Paul?

PAUL - I said, you act like a bitch sometimes.

The door opens. He stands up straight. Emma marches toward him. Paul walks backwards. She thrusts her index finger into his chest.

EMMA - Don’t, you, dare, call me that shit again. Got it?

He swallows a saliva and nods in agreement.

EMMA - She storms into the bedroom, slamming the door shut.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT - LATER

Emma’s curled in a fetal position studying a negative home pregnancy test. A piece of paper slides underneath the door. She picks it up revealing a drawing of a small, sad face.

She smiles.

Another paper glides under the door. She holds it finding a lynched stick figure. Emma crumples the drawing and tosses it across the floor landing in trash.

She snickers.

Then, a screw rolls inside. Emma bites her lips staring at the negative test. A tears drops. She quickly wipes it off.

 EMMA - I'm sorry.

PAUL (O.S.) - I know. I mean, me too.

EMMA - No. I’m sorry about this.

She slides the test underneath.

Paul sits with his back against the door. He picks up the test wide-eyed.

EMMA - Are you mad?

No response.

EMMA - Paul?

INT. HALLWAY - DOOR - CONTINUOUS

He snaps out of his focus on the test.

PAUL (bitter) - What?

He shakes his head, tucking in his lips.

INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

EMMA - Remember the time we first moved into together?

PAUL (O.S.) - What about it?

EMMA - We were so happy. So excited to finally be in the same place together.

PAUL (O.S.) - I know. I remember.

EMMA - Then, we started speaking about the future, except, this time it was more....more....

She sheds a tear.

PAUL (O.S.) - I thought that’s what you wanted?

EMMA - I don’t want kids Paul. I can’t have them.

She opens the door. They gaze into each others eyes. Paul drops the pregnancy, grabs one of her hands, and caresses one of her cheeks.

PAUL - Okay.

EMMA - I know you want them, but I’m not ready. And I know we’re not getting any younger.

PAUL - Okay.

EMMA - But, I’m not ready now and I don’t know if I’ll ever be...

PAUL - Emma.

She holds onto his hand that’s on her cheek.

PAUL - I’m guessing the operation went well.

EMMA - Is that okay?

He leans in. They share a kiss. She smiles. He recicprocates.

PAUL - C’mon.

They stand and leave the room. The pregnancy test is the only thing left on the screen.

PAUL (O.S.) - Let’s throw away our broken crib.

EMMA (O.S.) - I think we should burn it.

FADE TO BLACK.
