A pilgrimage

Find a room that is blank and beautiful

with light that falls in shafts

through a window overlooking a secret garden.

Place the things you carry on the wooden desk -

Hamlet's walnut shell, a 1898 Baedeker,

and a beeswax candle in a cup

as smooth and white as a skull.

Make #35 Earl Grey tea

in the white ceramic tea pot from Paris

and pour the milk

while everyone in the house

turns over in their sleep.

Each sip from the Austrian tea cup

will go to your head like dandelion wine.

Each key you press is another step

up the long hill and through the trees,

carrying a bundle of ideas and dreams

to fallow ground.
