A documentary film about my life as one of El Salvador's dissapeared children.

Background

In the Fall of 2010 John and I launched a Kickstarter campaign to begin work on this film. With support from family and friend they were able to hit their goal and became one of the first 10,000 successful projects on the site.

Four months later we embarked on a 10-day trip to El Salvador, where we interviewed several members of Nelson’s family, children forcibly disappeared during the country's civil war, and met the President Mario Funes. We traveled to the former Conflict Zone to meet Suyapa Serrano Cruz, a woman who one day will be listed in textbooks about Latin America as a Civil Rights Hero.

Over the past three years we have been working to tell this powerful story and are preparing to launch in the spring of 2014.

JJJRH Strategy

There are a number of different themes that our film touches on. They include:

  • Behind the scenes
  • Identiy
  • El Salvador
  • Adoption
  • Family
  • War
  • Human Rights
  • Forien Policy
  • Documentary films

My plan is to use these themes to come up with different jabs on each platform. Since each site requires a different jab I'm still trying to figure out what that will look like. I've been using my personal accounts to experincement.

I've learned a lot but here are some highlights:

  • Becaue we are working on a film I can make GIFs pretty easily
  • Historical Photos might work on Pinterest
  • Our fans like "Family style" pictures, usually featuring myself, with a short story.
  • Most of our facebook fans are online between 6pm - 10pm
  • My fans our made up of 60% female ages 25 to 44
  • I may need to find someone who can create content for our demographic
  • You can add hashtags in the comments of instagram

Facebook (Updated 12/12/13)

12/12/13 - After looking at my Facebook insights I figured out that most of our audience is online between 6pm and 10pm. I posted cross posted this photo from Instagram around 5:30pm. I had my girlfriend and brother like it so it would get some early traction. The result was extremely sucessful. The post had our highest engagement and widest reach of anything we have ever done!

A typical post on our page has a reach of less then 100 and only 1 or 2 likes. Results from yesterday:

12/08/13 - I posted my second attempt at a right hook and it didn't do much better. Still working on the content. A Big instight was that the majority of our audience is made up of females ages 25-44 and my posts might not be resonating with them.

12/05/13 - So... my first Right Hook, posted right before lunch, was a dud. While it did "reach" more people than our normal posts, it had a very low engagement. Only 3 likes, 1 share and 2 clicks on the link.

After looking at our stats I think the time of day was fine but the post wasn't that fun/interesting.

Instagram (Updated 12/12/13)

As a Photographer Instagram is a good platform for me. Much like Facebook I've been using my personal account to practice before starting to use the account for the film.

12/12/13 - I posted my second jab on our Instagram account and crossed posted on Facebook. I used the hashtag #throwbackthursday and #tbt. I got a couple of likes and a new follow.

12/5/13 - I posted a Jab for the film and got a decent reaction. I tried to write the copy so that the hastags could be included in the caption. I also searched for several varitions of the hashtags before picking the ones I used.

11/22/13I posted this picture a week ago with three hashtags and got 9 like and a new follower.

I also learned that you can post hashtags in the comments instead of the description. Like this:

For the film I'll going to be posting behind the scenes photos from events, production, and filming.

Twitter (Updated 12/14/13)

12/14/13 - I stated impletmenting the twitter bio hack, where you search for people talking about your subject and follow them. They get an email with your profile and a link to your project. I just started this last night so it will take a while for the results to come in.

11/14/13 - I jumped in on a few conversations with the hastag #elsavlador. It is challegening to find ways to insert myself but here is one example:

Pinterest (Updated 12/14/13)

I've set up a couple film related pinterest boards on my personal account. However, I'm really struggling to come up with content for it. Given my demogrpahic on FB, Pinterest might be a good platform or us.

12/14/13 - After spending some more time on pinterest I realised there is a history sceontion. Given the fact that our film covers some central american history I think this could be a good place to explore. I will need some more time on this platform.

Tumblr (Updated 12/14/13)

12/14/13 - I decided to go all out for the end of the course and create a gif for the film. After playing around with some gif making software I came up with this:

I posted it on my personal tumblr and got 1 repost and 1 follow. Idealy I would link it to the video gif was made from but the video isn't public yet.

Making this sparked ideas for more gifs. Next step is to created a branded page for the film.
