"A Long Way Gone - Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ismael Beah

I choose a "A Long Way Gone - Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ishmael Beah. It is a riveting story of a child's journey through hell and back. Beah tells his childhood experiences growing up in war-torn Sierra Leone where he fled attacking rebels by wandering a land rendered by unrecognizable violence, but eventually getting caught by the government army where he found he was capable of truly terrible acts. This story is about redemption, faith, and hope.

I am hoping to do this story some justice in representing it in a single graphic image.

My initial wordlist consisted of symbols and imagery that consitently came up in every chapter of the book. I then concepted 4 different images below. They are very rough.

CONCEPT 1: Man running
Throughout the book you can sense a fleeing feeling. Beah needs to run away from the rebels, then he needs to run back to his family, again run away from rebels, then eventually the army, and so on. Theres always a sense of urgency because there is danger around the corner. If you dont run, you die is the sense I get.

So taking that into literal sense. I wanted to portray that feeling in this dropcap.

Boy soldiers were equipt with large AK-47s with little or no practice. I wanted to show that in this mark.

CONCEPT 3: Drugs & BulletsThe army supplied the boy soldiers with guns, bullets, pride in country, and most of all revenge against the rebels.
