A Gem in the City: Belle Isle, Detroit

A Gem in the City: Belle Isle, Detroit - student project

Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

Hello from Detroit! Detroit gets a bad rap in the news as I'm sure many have heard but it really is a great city, you just have to know how to use it! We have this great island off the city called Belle Isle and I want to make a map to showcase it. It is such a beautiful, peaceful place surrounded by water and breathtaking views. It has the potential to be sooo much more but until then I want to encourage people to make the most of it and get them to visit.

I often do runs on the island, go biking riding, kayak, hit golf balls at the driving range and used to row from the Detroit boathouse. It's a great place to picnic, there are perfect places to fly kites, I even used to ice skate on some of the small canal areas/lakes. It used to be bustling with people back in the day but do to city issues the upkeep is not as great and do to Detroit's reputation I think people shy away from going. It is what you make it :)

Why am I the expert to create this map?

Not many people see the potential Belle Isle offers so I'm going to do my best to show it.

Who is my target audience?

Friends and family interested in using my map to get around the island. It will be a printed map I'm thinking 11x17 and I can also email a pdf.

What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)

I need street names, attractions and icons to show what you can do where. Will also need to show directional arrows as most streets are one way. Google map of Belle Isle here

Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....

I know Detroit isn't the most glamourous place in the world but I'd just like to know if it's a place you'd consider visiting based on my completed project ha ha!
