A Day at the Beach

A Day at the Beach - student project

Hi all! I've joined the workshop for this class, and as a true procrastinator I have waited until the last moment to upload my list.
I decided to go with a beach theme, because I was supposed to go to the beach next month. Also I've been longingly looking at photos of my last holiday, which was partially at the beach. You know how it is.

For the project I want to create illustrations to go with a hypothetical blogpost about a day spent at the beach. Next is the theme and the two lists I ended up with after giving things some thought:

I might change some of the things as I go along, but we'll see :)

On to the next part!

I have been sketching! While I was doing that, I realised that this project is actually quite difficult :o It could also be that I'm simply thinking too much instead of drawing. Anyhoo, here are the initial exploration sketches and the rough conceptual sketches:

There are two things that keep going through my head:

1. What style would be best to get the vibe I would like translated in the illustrations, keeping in mind that I have list 2 to think about as well.

2. How am I going to tie together the seperate pieces that exist in my concept sketches.

I decided I wanted to try a monochromatic style and ended up creating two versions of the final illustrations:

I guess that's it for list A :D

This week I've been working on list B. I found it challenging to do this list, but a fun challenge!
For now I have a bunch of sketches ready. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stick to the style all that well, but I'll try my best!

I didn't practise much before I went into the concept design. I got ideas for them pretty quickly, but still had to figure out how to get it on paper well. I ended up with this:

Now it's time to do the lineart and get it into PS :D

I've been experimenting! Last night I finished colouring the second set of illustrations, and I have to say I'm pleasently surprised by the results!

This morning I decided to play around with the colours some more, which is always fun and very time consuming lolol. I ended up creating another version of both sets.
Also, the perfect spheres I had as a background started to bother me, so I decided to warp them a bit using the path tool. Now the images feel more organic and frivolous :D

I'm here to learn, so I would love to hear feedback. Anything you can think of!
