"We're all stories in the end..."

I'm working on the project I started in part one of this class. I've included the sketches from that class at the bottom of the page because it's fun to see how these projects evolve. I'll be posting drawings from this class here at the top.

At this point, I've inked it, scanned it, and vectorized it. I've never made something like this before so progress is slow, but hey, it's all a learning experience, right? :) I don't have a very clear idea of what colors I would like to use other than a strong feeling that TARDIS blue will be involved. I've also added some dimension to the border but I'm not sure that I like it.

Update: To tell the truth, I'm horribly stumped on this project at the moment. I'm hopeful, though, that I will find a way to solve the problems I'm having and I will be able to post a color version soon. :)

Update: color

Here is some of my inspiration for color and a palette I came up with:

...and this is the current iteration of my project:

The main problem bothering me here is that the black ink splatters are completely lost in the dark blue background. I don't really like it with a light background, and it also loses the contrast with the gold letters. I think I can fix this when I add texture, by making some parts of the background lighter and some darker. Color advice and suggestions are welcome! I hope to work on adding texture very soon.

------>>> Update!

Well I got myself a new computer and realized how very "off" my old monitor was in terms of color... so that's embarassing. Haha.

Anyway I think I may actually be finished with this project. I fixed the gross colors and added various textures to the letters and background. I do feel that the project seemed to lose some of its handdrawn feeling-- I don't know if I just overworked it in the texture stage, perhaps. I might still tone down the textures a bit before printing.

Anyway, I really, really enjoyed this project and this class, and I learned a tremendous amount... I created this using free open source programs (Inkscape and GIMP) so the process of translating the class instructions into something that would get comparable results was challenging, especially as I'd never used Inkscape before, but very educational for me. I heart Google. Thank you, Mary Kate, for a great class!

Final version:

*************** here are my sketches from part one ***************

I decided to work with the quote, "We're all stories in the end.... so make it a good one!" Wise words from the Doctor, and not a bad life motto either.  I focused on the word "stories" for the warm-up.

I made a bunch of sketchy thumbnails. I had some trouble nailing down what look I was going for.

I realized "fairy tale" was the vibe I wanted and finally hit on a layout I liked.

Here's a tighter sketch. Still needs some... tweaking, but I like it. I would like to add some kind of ornamentation or border and also some kind of decoration inside the letters. Some of the spacing is wonky too, I see. I plan to do at least one more finalized sketch before moving on to inking.

...okay, an update! Revised sketch. Still needs some minor revisions (the border, and some of the curves) but I'm hoping to get a final inked version soon. By the way, this has been really fun. :)

Final inked drawing! TIme to add some color!
