"Medicine For The Millenial"

Hey everybody! It's nice to be here and take this class and I'm just so excited to get this ball rolling. 

1.0 Background Thought

Seeing this project had to do with emotion, I wanted to explore and create something inspired by a quote I recently heard from an episode of American Horror Story (Huge AHS fan here) that deals with this subject. 

In American Horror Story, a character is killed and brought back to life as a hollow person. As she reflects on being brought back as being dead and how it compares to her life as a living person, she says: 

"I am a millennial, Generation Y. Born between the birth of aids and 9/11, give or take ...our one defining trait is a numbness to the world, an indifference to suffering. I know I did anything I could to not feel. Sex, drugs, booze, just take away the pain. Take away my mother and my asshole father, and the press, and all the boys I loved who wouldn’t love me back. I would give everything I have or will ever have just to feel pain again, to hurt.

...

We think that pain is the worst feeling, it isn’t, how can anything be worse than this eternal silence inside of me."

Echoing the sentiment of a popular quote "It's better to feel than to feel nothing at all" - in today's society, it is commonly perceived that emotions such as fear, sadness should be hidden or eliminated as they are seen as 'handicaps' or 'weaknesses'. As someone who's been through anxiety, I personally believe that one should not completely suppress these negative feelings, I began my road to recovery when I realised it reflected something positive you possess. 

As a personal reaction, I thought it'd be interesting project to create medicine that is pain for these so-called 'milennials' who may have lost their feeling. Additionally, the medicine would be manufactured by the past - the generation who had feeling. 

1.1 Inspiration 

So I will be making the packaging of an imaginary set of medicine. Each 'syrup' is a different pain/emotion that people of today's generation wish to suppress.

I will be exploring color combinations to convey the feeling of the pain.

The emotions I'm looking at are:

VULNERABILITY | SORROW | NERVOUSNESS | STRESS

1.2 Moodboard and References

I decided to take a look at the branding of antique medicine. Here in Hong Kong, there are still very traditional pharmacies that have a lot of medicine of the past. They all have a very distinct, eccentric way of packaging that caught my eye. As someone who loves immense detail and multilayered design, these ones caught my eye. (And it's awesome that they all use such interesting color palettes as well!)
