When I was 6 or 7, my mother took my sister and me to the Har Mar Mall in St. Paul, Minnesota, where some women sat at long tables making Ukrainian easter eggs or pysanky. They were selling kits and showing how to make the eggs using a wax resist process. The results were beautiful. My mother bought a kit and we tried making Ukrainian eggs at home. I've been making these batik eggs every Spring since.

I keep them in egg cartons put away in a cabinet because they're very fragile. Sometimes when friends come by, and want to see the eggs, they take them out and turn them around and around to study how the patterns unfold across the curved eggshell. They tell me I should find a way to exhibit them.

But how can I show these fragile objects without putting them in danger of being broken?

Thinking about this for a number of years, the idea of a film began to take shape.

I contacted Abbott Imaging in Somerville, Massachusetts for help.

Initially we worked on solving the problems of shallow focus and reflected light obscuring the patterns.

We've experimented with stop action.

and GIF animation.

We've written a script about a plain egg meeting numerous decorated eggs of great intricacy and fragile beauty. The plain egg learns how they were created, and takes the risk of becoming a decorated egg, too. Conveying this story presents technical challenges such as animation to show the eggs interacting and dancing.

You can go to http://www.IntoTheOvoid.com/ to see a gallery of eggs I've made.

You can also view reports on our progress.

If you like what you're seeing here, I hope you'll reach out to your networks about this project. Please do check out the fun rewards. I'd love to have you join me as a funder on the "Into the Ovoid" film project!

Thank you.
