Learn how Tom Froese creates digital illustrations reminiscent of traditional printmaking techniques.

Skillshare Premium Members are invited to join us on Thursday, January 7th at 3:00 PM EST for a live online Zoom session with illustrator Tom Froese all about how he uses Photoshop to achieve his signature, analog-inspired style. The session will run for approximately 90 minutes. Click the “Remind Me” button above to register!

Tom Froese is an award winning illustrator, teacher, and speaker who has worked with clients like Yahoo!, Airbnb, and GQ France. He loves creating images that make people happy, and his signature style is full of joyful colors, spontaneous textures, and quirky shapes inspired by retro printmaking techniques. As a teacher, Tom loves to inspire fellow creatives to become better at what they do—and has done just that with over 70,000 students on Skillshare.

This live session will include:

  • A peek under the hood to see exactly how Tom achieves his signature flat and textured illustrations
  • A deep dive into how to use Photoshop as a powerful illustration tool, including skills like using digital brushes to create texture and add details, using the Pen Tool to define bold and curvy shapes, using layers and clipping masks to your advantage, and more
  • The chance to put these new techniques into action by working together to turn a sketch into a final illustration (Tom will be providing a sketch to work from, or you’re welcome to bring your own!)

This class will be ideal for beginner to intermediate illustrators who have access to Photoshop and a graphics tablet (like a Wacom or iPad with Apple Pencil)—while plenty of the techniques will apply if you are working on desktop with a mouse, Tom will be sharing some of the specific advantages working with a tablet gives you. You can download the brushes, Photoshop file, and other materials for class here.

Of course, if you have none of these things, you’re still welcome to join and learn from watching a master illustrator in action!

Throughout the session, you’ll be encouraged to work alongside Tom and ask questions. Feel free to add questions in advance of the event using the discussion forum below, or bring them live to the Zoom session. We look forward to seeing you soon!
