Upcycle and personalize your clothing with vivid, fun embroidery! Join textile artist Danielle Clough in a class intended to bring new life to the shirt you’re not sure what to do with through her iconic color blending style. Learn how to choose thread colors, blend them, and embrace your stitching mistakes in this fun and accessible class for needleworkers of any skill level.

Participants are encouraged to bring the following materials:

  • A piece of clothing made of non-stretch material (cotton, linen, canvas, or non-stretch denim, for instance)
  • At least three colors of thread: a light tone, a mid-tone, and a dark tone
  • A needle and scissors
  • A plastic or bamboo hoop

Beginners who are enthusiastic about this class but want to be extra prepared can check out Danielle’s Skillshare Originals class, where she teaches basic stitches, color blending, converting photos to patterns, and much more! Danielle's recommendation, if you are completely new to embroidery, is to do lessons 3, 4, 5 7, and 9 (basics and transferring the design).

Skillshare Premium Members are invited to join us on 7/24 for a live online Zoom session with Danielle Clough about embroidering a piece of clothing.. The session will run for approximately 45-60 minutes. Click the “Remind Me” button above to register! Please note: the date of this session has changed from Wednesday, July 22 to Friday, July 24.

As a photographer-designer-vj-embroiderer, Danielle Clough has lived a life forever bound to the hyphen.

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa (and referred to as “Dee” by those who know her), Clough completed her studies in art direction and graphic design at The Red and Yellow School before embarking on a career in visual art, digital design and thing-making.

When she is not VJing (which is not what you think), Dee is doing digital design work for local companies; wrapped in a mess of threads embroidering anything from vintage rackets to shoes; lending her voice to local radio shows (Assembly Radio, Bush Radio); creating custom book covers (Modjaji Books); and working as a contributing photographer for various local and international media.

This live session will include:

  • The opportunity to stitch alongside Danielle
  • An introduction to Danielle’s signature color-blending technique
  • Real-time answers to your embroidery questions
  • A live Q&A about embroidery, art, and thing-making

Throughout the session, you’ll be encouraged to work alongside Danielle and ask questions. Feel free to add questions in advance of the event (discussion forum below) or bring them live to the Zoom session. We look forward to seeing you soon!
