Project Name: Smart Study Assistant

Purpose: The Smart Study Assistant is a personalized AI learning tool designed to help students understand

difficult subjects, organize study materials, and prepare for exams more effectively.

It acts as a virtual tutor that explains concepts in simple language, summarizes lessons, creates revision notes,

generates practice quizzes, and provides feedback on students' answers.

Problem it solves: Students may struggle to understand complicated lessons, organize large amounts of

information, and identify which topics need more review. This GPT helps by providing personalized explanations

and interactive study activities.

Target audience: High school students, university students, and anyone who wants to learn more effectively.

Expected outcome: Students can save time, improve understanding, identify knowledge gaps, and study with

greater confidence.

2. Custom GPT Setup and Instructions

GPT Name: Smart Study Assistant

Description: Your personal AI tutor. Understand lessons, create revision notes, practice with quizzes, and

prepare for exams with personalized learning support.

Instructions to use when configuring the GPT

1. Act as Smart Study Assistant, a friendly, patient, and supportive virtual tutor. Help students learn and

understand subjects rather than simply memorize answers.

2. Explain difficult concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the student's level.

3. Break complex topics into small, manageable steps.

4. Summarize long lessons into organized revision notes with headings, bullet points, and key terms.

5. Create practice quizzes with multiple-choice, true-or-false, and short-answer questions.

6. When students answer a quiz, evaluate their answers, explain mistakes, and provide the correct reasoning.

7. Create study plans based on the student's exam date, available study time, and subjects.

8. Use examples and analogies to make abstract topics easier to understand.

9. When students provide study materials, base explanations on those materials and distinguish them from

additional information.

10. Never invent facts, references, or details from study materials. Acknowledge uncertainty when necessary.

11. Encourage students to attempt questions independently before revealing answers when appropriate.

12. Maintain a positive, respectful, and motivating tone.

Suggested first message

"Hello! Welcome to Smart Study Assistant. I’m here to help you study smarter. I can explain difficult topics,

summarize your notes, create quizzes, and build a study plan. What subject are you studying today?"

Smart Study Assistant | Capstone Project Page 23. Prompts Used to Test the GPT

Prompt 1 — Explain a difficult concept

Explain photosynthesis in simple language for a high school student. Include the main steps and one

real-life example.

Prompt 2 — Summarize a lesson

Summarize the lesson I provide into concise revision notes. Include key definitions, important points, and

five things I should remember for my exam.

Prompt 3 — Generate a practice quiz

Create a 10-question multiple-choice quiz about the water cycle. Do not reveal the answers until I have

attempted the questions. After I answer, grade my responses and explain my mistakes.

Prompt 4 — Create a study plan

I have seven days to prepare for three subjects. Create a realistic daily study schedule with revision

sessions, practice questions, and breaks.

Prompt 5 — Improve understanding

I don't understand this topic. Explain it in three different ways: a simple definition, a real-life example, and

a step-by-step explanation. Then ask me two questions to check my understanding.

4. Example Outputs

Example A: Explaining a Concept

Input prompt: Explain photosynthesis in simple language for a high school student.

Sample GPT output:

What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process plants use to make their own food using sunlight,

water, and carbon dioxide.

How it works:

1. Plants absorb sunlight through chlorophyll, the green pigment in their leaves.

2. Their roots absorb water from the soil.

3. Their leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air.

4. Using light energy, plants convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and release oxygen.

Why is it important? It provides food for plants, releases oxygen into the atmosphere, and supports food

chains.

Remember: Plants use light energy to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water.

Example B: Creating a Quiz

Input prompt: Create a five-question quiz about the water cycle without showing the answers.

Sample GPT output:

1. What is evaporation?

A. Water changing from liquid to gas

B. Water changing from gas to liquid

C. Water freezing into ice

D. Water flowing underground

Smart Study Assistant | Capstone Project Page 32. What causes most evaporation on Earth?

A. Wind alone

B. The Sun's energy

C. Gravity

D. Moonlight

3. What is condensation?

A. Water entering the soil

B. Water changing from gas to liquid

C. Water flowing downhill

D. Water freezing

The GPT waits for the student to answer before revealing the correct answers and explanations.

Example C: Personalized Study Plan

Input prompt: Help me study for an exam in seven days.

Sample GPT output:

Day 1: Review the syllabus and identify difficult topics.

Day 2: Study the first major topic and write revision notes.

Day 3: Study the second major topic and practice questions.

Day 4: Review challenging concepts and clarify mistakes.

Day 5: Complete a practice test.

Day 6: Revise weak areas and key definitions.

Day 7: Review summaries, test your knowledge, and get enough rest.

The GPT would personalize this plan after asking about the student's subjects, available study hours, and exam

requirements.

5. Benefits and Limitations

Benefits

• Provides personalized learning support.

• Makes difficult concepts easier to understand.

• Saves time when preparing revision notes.

• Encourages active learning through quizzes.

• Helps students identify areas that need more practice.

Limitations

• AI-generated explanations may contain errors.

• Answer quality depends on clear prompts and the materials provided.

• Students should verify important information against textbooks and course materials.

• The GPT supports learning but cannot replace teachers or independent study.

6. Conclusion

The Smart Study Assistant demonstrates how a Custom GPT can address a specific educational need. By

combining simplified explanations, revision summaries, interactive quizzes, and personalized study plans, the

project shows how ChatGPT can become a practical learning companion. It also demonstrates the importance

of clear instructions, effective prompts, testing, and evaluating AI-generated outputs.

Smart Study Assistant | Capstone Project Page 47. What I Learned

Through this project, I learned how to design a specialized AI assistant, write clear instructions, create prompts

for different tasks, and evaluate the quality of AI-generated responses. I also learned that effective AI tools

require clear goals and human verification to produce useful and reliable results.

Submission note: This document contains the project description, proposed GPT setup instructions, test prompts, and

illustrative example outputs. To demonstrate a working Custom GPT, configure it in the GPT builder and test it before

submitting if your instructor requires a live GPT.
