I really enjoyed this class! It helped me further my knowledge on how to create pattern brushes (and how to get seamless patterns every time!)

Tile Brush

I needed to use inspiration to create the symmetrical patterns for this task so I looked up geometric Arabic patterns. This is not my usual style so it was fun to try it out

Brush Sets

I need up creating 30 different brushes with Sandra’s advice to use the designs you have already made then tweak them i.e scale them up, down, inverting, rotating and layering. In one of the last classes, Sandra explains how to share and export your brushes, so I split up the brushes I created into different brush sets according to their themes and have shared some of my favourites below.

Adding pattern brushes to my existing artwork

I decided to revisit a few of my older, or unfinished artworks to see if I could add more interest. I liked the idea and colour pallet of the original piece below, but I couldn’t make it work and left it unfinished. This was a perfect piece to revisit and use the pattern brushes I had created to bring all the elements together. There were lots of areas that I could add different textures and patterns such as the bushes and the characters clothing.

Interesting details

I’ve shown closes ups of the interesting details where I was able to use the pattern brushes. Some I have used to add textures, others were used for bold design choices.

I created the giraffe artwork in 2020 when I first started using procreate and creating digital art. At the time I loved the piece and I hand drew the giraffe prints onto clipping masks. I wanted to try a giraffe pattern brush that I created as part of the class, on them. I actually found that some of my other patterns (checks, stars and hearts) were more visually interesting and cute. Looking back, the sunflowers don’t appear to be drawn in the same style so I swapped them out and used some cute graphic clouds instead. I feel like the clouds also exaggerate how tall the giraffes necks are!

I also revisited this home illustration that I created during a different Skill Share Class a couple of years ago. I still love the original design, but I needed a quick house illustration to try out some of my brickwork brushes that I created. I’ve opted for more bold and summery colours and I absolutely love it! It could also look interesting to use some patterns that aren’t linked to brickwork or architecture - that will be my next trial!
