Style class project: 26 Tattoo Alphabet - student project

So far I went through the exercises to the point of finishing the final sketches for the set of four first illustration. I will update my project, when there is more to show!

Exercise #1 INSPIRATION CASE STUDY

PROJECT PLAN: For this project I choose the overall theme of Tattoos, deciding which words to choose, took me quite some time. Starting with some research I came up with more and more possibilities. I choose a mix of Tattoo artists, tattooed people, types of tattoos, and styles.

For the first illustrations I choose Aristocratic (tattooed aristocrats), Geometric (tattoo style), Ötzi (prehistoric tattoed man found in the Ötztal mountains in southern Tirol) and Valie Export (austrian performance artist, feminist, who got a tattoo of a garter belt on her tigh as part of her artistic work).

Now I’m working on finishing the first four. I want to work with clear flat shapes combined with texture/ a textured brush.

There are some things for me to work out:
The color palette
How to keep consistency with the  background: some illustration show more of a setting, others don’t. My first thought is to use some ind of shading to suggest a room in which the characters are located.
My main goal is to create a set of illustrations that are interesting to look at. Maybe I have to redo some sketches in the conceptual phase, if they don’t work. Also I might still change some of the prompts of the wordlist.
