Let's Write Horror: 15 Quick Lessons to Generate Ideas

That sounds cool. I haven't seen the remakes but I have seen clips of the original. What is one thing that you dislike about the remakes that you plan on fixing for your own project?

Oh god, just warning that this could turn ranty. (Spoilers)

1.) They changed his backstory so that he was just a child molester and not a killer. 

In the original, Wes Craven was going to make Freddy a child molester as well as a killer. Out of respect for a high profile child molestation case going on during the time of filming that was removed. However, in the remake, this Freddy molested a bunch of kids at a Preschool he worked at, (as a gardener of all things). Now, I'm not about to sit here and say you can't have a child molester in a horror movie. I just think that an intrinsic part of Freddy Krueger's character is that he is a murderer. But also my problem was in the execution...

2.) They unintentionally (hopefully) justified the remake Freddy's revenge motivation. WHEN THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE!

This is the main thing that pissed me off. So, Freddy is molesting preschool children, the children tell. Instead of going to the police, the group of parents decide they don't want to put their kids through that trauma of taking the stand. So they hunt Freddy down and torch him in an old factory. 

Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't believe your kids if they say they are being molested. But they specifically say that THE PARENTS DIDN'T FIND THE "SECRET CAVE" THAT THE KIDS SAID THEY WERE GOING TO. They had NO evidence, apart from the testimony. 

So they go through the whole spiel that "ohmygawd he could be innocent". But after literally no time looking around, (that is Nancy and Quentin when they return to the preschool) they find all the evidence they could possibly need to prove Freddy's guilt. 

WHAT STOPPED THE PARENTS FROM GOING TO THE BASEMENT AND ACTUALLY GETTING A STRONGER CASE AGAINST HIM?!

Do the filmmakers really want to condone just ignoring due process and lynching people? 

Freddy wasn't innocent, but what if he had been?!

3.) They couldn't bloody help themselves. 

The people behind the remake had a knee-jerk reaction of "Let's just redo every single creepy thing from the original without any real justification". They were perfect as they were already!  

4.) They had an opportunity to do a prequel and they just decided to remake a movie that (arguably) didn't need to be remade. 

I think that's the crux of it. Sorry for the huge rant, but I really like NOES and it kind of pisses me off. 

Disclaimer: This isn't to say some aspects of the remake were good. I didn't mind Jackie's performance and the micronaps and other aspects of sleep deprivation were good. It was the script and some aspects of the execution that REALLY pushed my buttons.

So you’re looking into keeping Freddy’s original backstory as a killer and make it so the parents went about handling him in a better way?

Not necessarily a "better" way, but at least not make Freddy appear sympathetic or in any way justified. 

Also, we've seen Freddy kill teens in their dreams a lot, but what about before he was killed? I find the evolution of killers quite interesting and hope to put a worthy spin on it. It will be more of a cat and mouse game, as the cops (who aren't complete morons) attempt to catch him. 

Also, Loretta Krueger (his wife) plays a much greater role in the whole affair.

1.) Introduction Hi! My name is Jemima!  I have always enjoyed the horror genre, (particularly slashers, sue me) but lately, I have taken an interest in A Nightmare on Elm Street. After watching the series finale Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, although silly, I got a crazy idea that basically amounted to: "What if Loretta Krueger played a larger part in the whole story instead of just getting murdered 30 seconds after being introduced!".  This morphed into (after watching the reboot/remake) I was like, screw this, I'm going to write my own version that brings ANOES into the modern era, and it not majorly sucking.  2.) Why is horror important? I think horror is important because it reminds us of the fragility of the human existence. Also, its great for people who love to be scared to NOT go and do stupid things to get the rush of adrenaline they are looking for.  3.) My fear One of my greatest fear will be losing control of the things I am able to control. Another is to find out that someone I trust has done something unforgivable.  4.) My thoughts on shock and gore  Look, shock and gore can be great fun but too much of it gets old... really quickly. Another thing is that there needs to be a contrast between the horror with a sense of normality.

And fix the mistakes that the remake/reboot made.&nbsp;
Because it made a lot.
