Painting pet portraits using watercolors is not only fun, but it can also generate income. I was able to transform my hobby into a full time career thanks to the income I make from painting custom pet portraits. Whether you are looking into monetizing your hobby, or if you just want to learn enough skills to paint your own cat, this class is for you!

Hello! My name is Emily Marie and I am a watercolor artist from Wisconsin. Before I started my art business, I worked for 10 years as an elementary school teacher. I use all the skills (and patience) I learned as a school teacher when I'm teaching all my in-person watercolor workshops.
As a dog mom myself, one of the first subjects I started painting was dogs! I've painted hundreds of different dogs and lots of different breeds. I started teaching intermediate classes via SkillShare and I also teach in-person beginners during my local "Paint your Pup" nights. I love being able to donate a portion of my class to local pet rescues since my dog Trufa is also a rescue dog!

What will I paint?
In this class, you will learn how to paint a Short-Haired Orange and White Cat using watercolors. You have the option to use the same reference photo I am using (located in the Resources Section) or you can use the skills you learn in this class to paint your own light colored, short-haired cat.
What will we explore?
- Professional quality supplies that I use to create my own pet portraits
- Using masking fluid to keep the whites of the paper clean
- Building up our painting layer by layer
- Practicing 3 different brushstrokes that I use for cat fur markings
- Painting fur around the neckline
- Creating a colorful splash behind our pets
- Negative painting and painting white fur
Skill Level of this Class
I recommend that you have at least a basic understanding of watercolors before taking this class. You will need to understand wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques as well as lifting.
Resources Offered in this Class
- Color copy of the reference photo of Pokey, a short-haired mixed breed cat
- Black Outline of just the cat's bust (for you to trace with a light box or other tool)
- PDF all the colors that I used to paint Pokey as well as some options for substitutions
- PDF of the watercolor supplies from the tutorial and where to purchase them
