Acerca de esta clase
In this detailed breakdown, I’ll guide you through the creation of a hyper-realistic 3D female head — focusing on lifelike skin texture, refined facial anatomy, and natural, voluminous hair.
Sculpting: The foundation begins in ZBrush, where I carefully sculpted the head with attention to realistic proportions, facial asymmetry, and subtle anatomical landmarks.
Texturing: Textures were crafted in Substance 3D Painter, using a combination of hand painting and high-resolution skin maps to achieve delicate color variation, pore detail, and subsurface scattering characteristics appropriate for light-toned skin.
Hair Grooming: The hairstyle was created using XGen in Maya, with individually controlled guides to shape soft, flowing strands that frame the face naturally and enhance the character's realism.
Rendering: Final renders were completed in Arnold for Maya, using a cinematic lighting setup and realistic skin shaders to bring out depth, mood, and subtle detail in every frame.
Whether you're learning hyper-realistic character creation or building your next standout portfolio piece, this is a must-watch breakdown.
Tools Used:
-
ZBrush (for sculpting)
-
Substance 3D Painter (for texturing)
-
Maya & XGen (for hair grooming)
-
Arnold (for final rendering)

Class Project: Texture, Groom & Render a Semi-Realistic 3D Female Head
In this class project, you’ll take a provided 3D head mesh and bring it to life with realistic textures, natural hair, and cinematic lighting. By the end, you’ll have a polished render of a semi-realistic female character head for your portfolio.
What You’ll Get:
A clean UV-unwrapped 3D head mesh
Reference images and mood board (optional)
Suggested shader, render and xgen setup templates/presets
Assignment Steps:
Import and Prepare the Head Mesh
Open the provided mesh in Maya or your preferred software
Set up scene scale and camera
Sculpt any young female of Choice Likeness
Texture in Substance 3D Painter
Paint realistic skin tones, roughness, and any extra details (e.g. freckles, makeup)
Export texture maps for Arnold
Groom Hair Using XGen
Use interactive grooming tools to create a natural hairstyle
Style it to reflect personality (e.g., curly, straight, bun, afro, etc.)
Keep it clean and believable — focus on silhouette and flow
Light & Render in Arnold
Set up lights for a dramatic or studio-style look
Apply shaders, plug in your textures, and render beauty shots
Deliverables (upload any or all of the following):
Final Render (close-up and full head)
Optional: texture maps preview (base color, roughness, etc.)
Optional: screenshot of hair grooming in XGen
Tips for Success:
Use real-life references for skin tone and lighting
Keep hair manageable — start simple, then layer complexity
Tweak your lighting and camera to show off the model best
Tools You’ll Use:
Zbrush (for sculpting)
Substance 3D Painter (for texturing)
Autodesk Maya XGen (for hair)
Arnold Renderer (for final output)
Optional Challenge: Try two lighting setups — one natural, one stylized — and compare your results.
