Acerca de esta clase
In this class you'll be painting a loose cityscape in one go. I want you to
- simplify the reference down to a few pencil lines
- move quickly from start to finish
- build up tonal contrast as we go
The class is fast intentionally, I want you to not overthink and just see how the pigments behave. We are going for loose and a little abstract.

Hi, I'm Nadine,
I'm an Australian watercolour artist with a particular interest in wildlife art. I love the spontaneity of watercolour and the wonderful effects that can be achieved with very little input. I strive to keep my paintings loose and love the challenge of drawing the viewer into the work through a well placed shadow or detail.
For me, the quicker the painting and the fewer the strokes the better the result. I endeavour to teach my students to relax and remember - it's just a piece of paper.

Proyecto de clase práctica
Assignment
Your class project is to paint a loose cityscape using working quickly from start to finish as the page is drying.
Materials
The reference photo is mine of a bridge in Melbourne and can be downloaded directly.
You can use any colours you like, but keep the palette limited to three or four colours. The paints I'll be using are
- Daniel Smith Indigo
- Winsor and Newton Cobalt
- Winsor and Newton Permanent Rose
Brushes
A mix of brushes is good for this one, large to get around the whole page and small for detail. It's great if you have a large flat brush but don't stress if you don't. I'll be using all Neef brushes, a 4600 squirrel mix size 12, a 987 Taklon glaze (flat) size 1", 4750-LP squirel mix size 10 and a small round 970 taklon size 3.
Arches cold press watercolour paper, 300g
Palette (I use a cheap basic one)
Board for the paper and masking tape to stick it to the board
Tissues/paper towel
HB pencil and eraser
Jar of water
Sharing Your Work
Please feel free to post your finished painting (or any of the stages) under "Your Project". Questions are encouraged and welcome.
The work you produce is for your own personal use - go ahead and hang it on your wall or gift to a friend but paintings from the class are not to be sold or exhibited.
