Create a hand drawn alphabet poster
Decorative Alphabets
- Project Brief
You begin with an existing font or any type specimen or any printed piece, and adapt that font to create a unique, full alphabet on a theme- a whole system that works together. You will go through font exercises and your final product will be a full, print-ready alphabet poster.
Project Specs
You can create your project in any medium you prefer, digital or analog are both fine.
Tools & Materials
- Paper, trace paper, drawing materials for sketching
- Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop for digitizing the final output of your piece.
- Gather inspiration
Assemble 5-10 fonts or type specimens to inspire your alphabet letterforms.
Take up to 20 photos during your day of stuff that you're drawn to or look at things you've already taken snaps of recently. It could be anything, it doesn't need to be type! Then use these for inspiration to come up with a theme.
Share: a moodboard of images to inspire your alphabet.
- Sketch 10 letterforms of the same letter
Take one letter and sketch it in 10 different ways, pushing yourself to consider the form of the letter and the many ways you can adapt it.
Share: A sketch of your letterform explorations.
- Create your final alphabet poster
Once you have drawn your final forms or digitized it, print or finalize your alphabet poster.
Share: a poster of your decorative alphabet.
