Meet Your Teacher
My name's Matty Brown, and I love visual storytelling. I am a freelance director, cinematographer, and editor. I was nominated for an Emmy at the 2013 50th Annual Emmy Awards for "The Piano", was a 2016 honoree at The Webby Awards for my film "Tangents", and hold the record for most Vimeo Staff Picks. I'm currently working on my short film "Thump", which was successfully funded in a recent Kickstarted campaign. Making emotional and imaginative pieces, whether it is films/docs, music videos, commercials, or museum installations, and bringing them to life in the most beautiful and ambitious way possible is my biggest passion in life.

Shoot a 1-minute emotion piece from your walk to the coffee shop.
ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment is to create a short video that conveys an emotion.
In the class video, I'll be taking a walk to the coffee shop and shooting for an hour or so, then editing the clips together.
Feel free to shoot your video in any place that's near you. The main thing I'd love for you to experiment with is getting creative with how you shoot it. Explore some of the in-camera techniques I share in the class, try out new things, capture the seemingly mundane little details of life (you can always use them as transitions later), and have fun!
DELIVERABLE
Upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube and embed it in your Project Workspace.

Inspiration
- Look Up At The Stars, Portugal! – One of the first times I really experimented with camera movement and techniques, in-camera effects, and creating a specific feeling (nostalgia).
- The Piano – One of the first times I tried a more narrative and constrained approach. Lots of in camera effects and experimentation with that piece as well. Plus, making a scary piece with something that isn't inherently scary was a blast!
- BIPOLAND – An interesting project because I tried to capture the contrast between the sadness and the happy excitement. If you can find two opposite emotions for your piece, explore that!
