If you are enrolled in any of our Web Development or Server Configuration courses, you are likely getting well acquainted with using Ubuntu!

Since Ubuntu recently released it's latest LTS version (18.04 Bionic Beaver), you might be interested to know what's new.

First of all, it's important to understand how Ubuntu versioning works!

The 18.04, is derived from the year 2018. The ".04" indicates that the official release for this version was in the 4th month of 2018 (April).

Ok great, so with that out of the way what's new?

Ubuntu 18.04 will come equipped with a brilliant new background (wallpaper).
Much Faster Boot Speed from previous versions.
New default graphics server. In previous versions such as Ubuntu 17.10, the Wayland Graphics server was used by default. This will now change to Xorg.
One of the most dramatic changes is the reduction in CPU usage.
100's of bug fixes - Ubuntu 18.04 released a long list of bug fixes from previous versions. This improves performance, reliability and security.
Ubuntu 18.04 comes pre-configured with a new app called GNOME To Do. It is a useful tool for organizing tasks, lists and other items.
Ubuntu 18.04 comes configured with Linux Kernel 4.15 by default. This provides a major improvement to performance and prevents a number of meltdown issues.
Ubuntu 18.04 has modified the interface of Nautilus File Manager. The new look is designed to be more user-friendly.
Improvements to help pages.
Ubuntu 18.04 will collect system usage by default. The data will be available for the public for analytical purposes. You can opt out of this option if you like. Here are some of the types of information the system will collect:
- Country
- Crash Reports
- Disk Layout
- Time taken to complete the Ubuntu Installation
- Version and flavour of your Ubuntu Installation
- Device Manufacturer
- Hardware statistics such as CPU, RAM, GPU, etc

There are a few other changes, but this list offers a good introduction into some of the most important ones!
