This is a planning document for the Skillshare Merchandising Magic Publishing Challenge, about a class where I teach students how to build their own mockups in Adobe Photoshop, from scratch.

This is how I started off, with a class cover concept:

I really wanted to find a sophisticated way to show the mockups we'd be illustrating in this class. The mockups form a subtle city skyline, taking up exactly 2/3rds of the frame, and the class title has a fairly formal treatment.

In a recent Skillshare Webinar, I learned that top left is best left clear in case Skillshare want to add the coveted Staff Pick badge! We also learned about best practice for Class Titles and Covers.

Also implemented is a great suggestion on the Teach Corps slack group to show the mockups going from wireframe to complete, to better demonstrate what I initially assumed was obvious from the title:

This isn't another mockups class about adding a Smart Object onto a photo or 3D render.

This is how to plan, build and art direct your own pro mockups from scratch - right out of Photoshop, and only Photoshop. There's a time and a place for Mockup Templates, but they just don't give you complete control of your design.

I’ve illustrated hundreds of products, from quick concepts to professional renders, for real brands like Axe (Lynx), Dove, Ola (Wall’s/Streets/Algida), Vaseline, Smirnoff, and Ariel. I believe illustrating original mockups is a skill every designer can benefit from and something I feel passionate about sharing.

The Class Outline details how the techniques will be taught iteratively, with the first lesson* being a very simple way to do a conceptual mockup, and build towards much more complex mockups using a full range of digital illustration techniques.
