Hello Drawing Enthusiasts,

In my class The Power of Line, Drawing Part 2, Proportions, I have had people tell me they have had problems placing the pyramid on the cube. I wanted to show some tips to help. To place the pyramid accurately. Like the illustration below.

Here's how to create this drawing. First the basics of creating the pyramid on the cube and then how to draw this specific pyramid on a cube.

1. Let's start with a simple cube

2. Next let's create an "x" on top of the cube to mark the center point or middle of the cube's top plane.

3. Next lets draw another cube stacked onto of this one. Then once we have drawn the second cube. On it's top plane let's once again draw "x" marks the spot using a diagonal from each corner. This again marks the middle of the top.

4. Next lets connect the two "middle points" of the top planes of the cubes to create a center-line.

5. Now let's take the four top corner points of the bottom cube and connect them the to top of the center-line to create our pyramid.

6. Now lets clean this up to show a pyramid stacked on top of a cube.

This is the easiest way to begin to stack objects is by using cubes and boxes and then building 3d shapes inside the box or in this case the cube.

Now in the drawing I do in the video uses this concept except it goes to the next step. So the illustration below shows all the steps to create the drawing. I short cut it a little in the video but I thought showing the full steps the "long way" might help.

First here is the reference.

I first identify the cube which is in a "corner view". I then I look at the pyramid which is 90 degrees to my "Line of Sight" (at least close to it) which makes is a "front view box" I need to draw to create the pyramid. Pyramid always have a square base so to create the box needed for the pyramid, I measured the width of the front and divided it into the height and it's twice as tall it is wide. So if I stack two cubes I will have a box the is twice as tall as it is wide. With this information we can now create the rectangle that will then be developed into a box. The illustration below is the process.
