Illustrate a spread from Roald Dahl's manuscript, "The Three Little Pigs"

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT

Your assignment for this class is to illustrate a complete spread of a children's picture book story. You can use the story given to you below as a manuscript to work from, or if you would like to come up with your own story idea, or already have a story written, please feel free to use your own!

Story Manuscript: The Three Little Pigs, by Roald Dahl via All Poetry

Your goal is to come away with three pieces of work: one final character model sheet, one finalized storyboard, and one illustrated spread. An optional bonus deliverable is to create a dummy booklet.

PROJECT SPECS

*Note: These are typically the sizes that work best for me and my process, and I'm including them here as a suggestion for students who are unsure of what size to create their artwork. If you have a different size you'd prefer to use, please go ahead and use what works best for you!

Character model sheet: US Letter paper size, landscape

Storyboard: US Letter paper size, using my templates or your own

Illustrated spread: Final size is up to you, portrait or landscape

PROJECT DELIVERABLES

I recommend that you complete the project deliverables as you watch the videos and follow along with the attached Project Guide. Here are the suggested deliverables to post in the Project Gallery after you complete each unit:

Unit 1: Picking Apart Picture Books

Decision to use The Three Little Pigs manuscript or your own original story
Marked up manuscript

Unit 2: Developing Your Characters

Character development sketches of one character
Character model sheet

Unit 3: Drawing your Storyboards

Final storyboard
Optional: Storyboard process

Unit 4: Creating Final Illustrations

Refined sketches of your chosen spread
Final illustrated spread
