1/ Journey

Immediately after hearing the first prompt, I had an image in my mind: a cloaked wanderer, slouched over his wand, slowly climbing a high moutain. But who knows why, in the process of sketching this, the narrow path became a city pavement, the tree became a flagpole and the mountains became houses. So I went with it!

2/ Cloudwatching

This was an exercise I already knew about but never tried it myself. I was surprised how cute some of them turned out (not really my usual way). But overall I am not very happy with the majority of the shapes.

3/ Slow

This really tested my patience! I chose a detailed technique for this ilu on purpose to see if I can do this. It made me a little angry by the end. Drawing is inspired by the german legend of the Pied Piper.

4/ Fast

I was inspired by this excercise to find my old set of oil pastels that I never use. And it was fun! The pastels don't allow for any small details and I enjoyed working in bold colors. I decided to draw some rats, perhaps still under the influence of the Pied Piper legend.

5/6/ Metamorphosis

I can't help it: "Metamorphosis" first of all makes me think of Kafka. Also, all insects must undergo metamorphosis after they're born. Sometimes, humans are also changing into someone else.

7/ Crowd of Creatures

Even though I love drawing all sorts of monsters, creatures and weird beings, for some unknown reason, today I couldn't find any inspiration for that. So I drew some lovely ants. Also, they are currently invading our kittchen.

8/ Colors

I was determined to test out a more abstract approach with this prompt. And it was a new experience in a way. The colors of today were: coffee, dirt, hay, ink and tea with milk.

9/ Flatten it out

I attempted to flatten out two people from a photograph. I used watercolors which is a medium that I am not entirely comfortable with. This excercise definitely challanged me in many ways - I fighted with the watercolours and it was also difficult to make everything as flat as possible (not sure if I failed there or not).

10/ Thread

I made a "thread drawing". It took me a riddiculous amount of time, haha. But this is exactly why this challenge is so great - because it encourages me to try new, unexpected things and come up with weird ideas. I included also the back side of the piece, because I think it turned out maybe better than the front.

11/ Transform

I transformed two of the previous drawings:

The page from Cloudwatching. Even though I liked some of the surprising drawings that came out of this excercise, I very much disliked the others. After some time of brainstorming how I could change/finish the image I came to the conclusion that it will be simply the best to get rid of the ones I didn't like. Sometimes, black paint is the answer to your problems, haha. But I decided to keep the illustrations I was ok with. Than I started to play. I tried to interpret the prompt a little differently than as I did for the first time.

The ants from Crowd of Creatures. I knew that the ants missed something. I wasn't satisfied with my lines and my shading and wanted to give more contrast to the drawing. It took me a while to find the bravery for this radical change (again, my mantra "When in doubt, use black" :D) but I think it was worth it. Sometimes, the unnecessery details are my enemy.

13/ Take 2

I created two drawings for this prompt. The first is a combination of the Pied Piper legend I did for day 3 & the technique I used in the first prompt. The second drawing combines the ant from "Crowd of Creatures" with the fast drawing style and materials. Fearless ? - image 10 - student project

14/ Texture

I used a photo of a stone surface I found on the internet as the starting point for my drawing.

Final thoughts

Thank you very much for this challenge!!! It really motivated me to draw more, it was great fun and most importantly for me - it allowed me to experiment and try new things in my sketchbook. I was especially surprised by how much I enjoyed creating abstract drawings, which is something I never really did before.
