Intuitive Abstract Practice and Inking - image 1 - student project

In this project-share, you'll find mostly practice background techniquess awaiting lines along with some textural close-ups. I also shared three abstract lined art with two started one of those completed.

The painting above was done on watercolor paper with big bubblewrap. I used colors that might lend themselves to nature-type projects.

Below is a wet watercolor on multi-media paper with cheesecloth laid on top. The texture is light, so I included a pic showing a close-up view.

Below is texture from cheesecloth, but on watercolor paper along with a close-up of the painting. I prefer the effects that appear on watercolor paper rather than multi-media.

IBelow-more texture! I tried using both a decorated paper napkin and paper towel. Then, having done a recent project with Elisabeth using embroidery on watercolors, I grabbed some authentic embroidery cloth to see how that would pop with texture. The sidebar was done with elongated plastic wrap. I love the texture from the counted crossstitch fabric and wish I could DO something with it, but no ideas yet.

Next is a nature-ish possibility with stretched plastic wrap with wc paint on wc paper. (Thanks for the idea of stretching plastic wrap, Elisabeth!)

Below: Thinking flowers for all these pinkalicious colors! This was wet watercolors on wet watercolor paper and scrinched plastic wrap on top.

Many of the ideas I started using to practice line-making on the abstract paintings are ideas presented by Elisabeth. I like the outlining for the pink and blue piece and also used some hartching. I was glad Elisabeth mentioned the better look of having those lines going in the same directiopn! Just looks better. More ahead for this one along with some others abovee.

Below: Here's an abstract watercolor I wasn't especially attached to until I saw some of Elisabeth's examples. I used the rectangle and circle shapes, filled-in shapes, circles and lines. Yeah, maybe I should have done circles OR lines, but I'm thinking about birds on those lines. If I don't go with the birds, I'm enjoying this, and know something will rise up to put down. The lines seem to breathe life into the work.

So many great ideas, Elisabeth, so thanks for an outstanding class to move us into using line-making ON painted backgrounds. A great way to take a step beyond just collage paper and toward a piece with unified lineword and morr thought put into it. Yeah, more work too! Worth it! Loved this class!
