Creating an incredible video montage is just half of the work. Now that you’ve finished the visuals, it is time to create a soundscape to go hand in hand with it, build tension, create drama, suspense and tell a story that no other medium can.

In this class, I will teach you how to not only improve and support your visual edit but also how to tell a story through sound.

Project Description

Assignment

For the class project you will be creating a soundscape for a video using the techniques you have learned.

Step 1 - Choose a video you would like to create a soundscape for and post a link to it in the project section of the class. If you do not have a video that you can make a soundscape for, do not worry, you can create a standalone audio work that will tell us all a story.
Step 2 - Create only the atmosphere track of the video and post it into the class project in the form of mp4 video (or wav file in case in case of standalone work)
Step 3 - Create a first draft of the mix and post it into the class project in the form of mp4 video (or wav file in case in case of standalone work)
Step 4 - Post the final video into the class project in the form of mp4 video (or wav file in case in case of standalone work)

I encourage you to upload each of the steps of your project as it is very important for you and your fellow students to go through ideas and comments with each other’s work.

In this chapter I will introduce the information on why I think this topic is important and for whom, what the student can expect from the class and what skills can be mastered during this class and class project. It will be followed by a short biography and closed with the class overview.

In this chapter I will be clarifying the class project and its importance, the steps needed to complete it and software needed. I will be refering to the websites I used and further reading will be added to the description section on the video.

Layering Sounds

In this chapter I will be covering the importance of sound in an audio visual form (films, videos, games, multidisciplinary art…), basic ways to think about sound and what are the necessary steps and techniques to create a soundscape of a particular scene. I will show students a video that I will create a soundscape for and then dissasemble the audio, track by track, in order for everyone to understand the process and steps needed to complete the scene. After the walkthrough, I will recap on the fundamental building blocks of the scene. Thereafter, I will then introduce the next lesson.

Creating the Perfect Ambient Sound

In this chapter I will be covering the types of ambient sounds that can be used within the work and how they are created, from location recordings to all-digital synthesised drones. Then, I will layer several ambient sounds in order to present the ways that students can go about creating the foundation of the scene. We will focus on the relationship between the sound and the site in which it resides and try to reconstruct it. We will make realistic ambiences and ones that are not, and talk about the importance of communicating the right approach. After we recaping everything learned, I will introduce next lesson.

Adding Sound Effects

In this chapter I will be covering how to add, manipulate, layer and mix the sound effects in order to create depth within the scene. We will use prerecorded sound effects, altered them in order to fit the scene, layer them to change their form (size, tone, depth), mix them to get the proper perspective and feel, and synthesize them to get new sounds out of them. I will also touch on the subject of non-diegetic or off-screen sound and how to think about the placement and selection of the key elements of the scene. After recaping, I will introduce next lesson.

Creative Perspective and Depth

In this chapter I will be covering the acoustic properties of the space of the scene (shape, size and material composition and its effects on the character of sound), how to manipulate the assets to become a part of this space and their perpectives relative to the viewer. Creative depth and placing individual sounds into their designated spaces within the scene is extremely important for the soundscape and can make or break the viewer’s attention. We will touch on the nature of the binaural sound and the “three-dimentional” audio and its use in todays emerging technologies.

In this chapter I will focus mostly on mixing the collection of sounds we have created for the video, and fine tunning them to our preference. I will also perform an overview of the codecs and formats used to export data for particular uses.

In this chapter I will be sharing my thoughts on the process and going over the individual parts of this class to sum up everything said. I will encourage students to participate with their project and to comment on each others work in order to get the most out of the course. In the end, I will thank the participants for taking the class.
