The theme:

I decided to go with something that is vey personal and close to me. So I made radical typography poster to my kids bedroom. I chose motto that is close to me and my kids as well.

The story:

My three years old son was affraid of our dark bedroom, cause of bogy that apparently lived there. I asked him if we could befriend that bogy. He said we could try. I asked him, if the bogy can perhaps dance. And he said to the dark space of the room: "Bogy, dance!". "Is he danceing," I asked. "Yes, he is. And he is happy, mum!" So now we have very happy bogy in our dark bedroom. He likes to dance and he is affraid of light.

The idea:

I was thinking about the poster for several days. Finaly, when I got to the paper, I found out there is not a lot to do. So I just did what was already written in my mind. The idea was clear. My kids don't read yet, so there is no need for the words to be readable. I wanted the poster to be fun, but radical. And a bit ghost like. I started with the marks.

The marks:

On the first photo there are marks made by this dropplet that comes with the ink bottle. It makes beautiful marks. It was just amazing to play with. It squeeks and splashes the ink all over the place.

Next to it are marks with old brush destroyed by kids. Kind of boring and very common marks.

First one down is simple dish washing sponge. That won for me. It's uncontrolable and that is fun!

Next to it is old toothbrush. I like to use in often, when I do illustraion. It makes my heart jump with joy. So many traces of paint in one go!

Well, I didn't try anything I didn't know, but I had much fun.

The process:

I had an idea to write large motto on whole paper, than color the negative space, so there will be ghost like letters on colorful page. At first I tried some writing. Truth say, I would need about 50 sheets of paper to do it properly. I didn't have them. So there are two tries (of about five).

I struggled with letter spaceing and how to fit everything in, so it would be pressed together, but not too much. In the first one I didn't plan last word well and it ended up pressed to the edge of the paper... Only one writing went well so I worked with that and there is how it looks after coloring with pencils:

So I did what I planed to do and I like it a lot. But I didn't want to stick with one version, so I did some more experiments. I used old drawings of my kids to write on. I am still processing what I did and thinking what the next step should be.

I also tried czech version of the motto. Graphic wise I like the english one better, but the czech one is dear to my heart and I am planning to work on that more. It's hard to fit it in one page, with all those accents, so there has to be another way how to cheer up this sign:

The summary:

I enjoyed this assignement very much, But I feel I am still very down to earth with the execution of my idea. I will carry it in my head and hope to improve of it in some time. I also like the motto I chose, so hopefully it could end up as properly printed poster for my friends (and maybe customer) to hang on their walls. Well, that is the dream.
