Your assignment is to write an essay, inspired by a popular song from the year you turned 13!

Step 1: Read my essay, "When the Monster Saves You."

Step 2: Type the year you were 13 into The Nostalgia Machine. Listen to the first song you recognize from that year's list of hits.

Step 3: Note memories, thoughts, and feelings that come up while listening. It's often helpful to assemble a list of facts from that time. Think about:

Where did you live?
What year you were in school? Who was your teacher?
What significant life events were happening?
Who were your friends?
What was happening in the news?
What were your secrets that year? Are they still secrets? Why?

Step 4: Write an essay on how the experience makes you feel, or tell me the story of your 13th year.
