You will need a light or medium thick fabric, a measuring & cutting tool( Ruler/measuring tape & scissors), a small piece of felt material or similar for the flower finishing. A small source of fire ( Lighter/ candle). Needle and thread, a fabric glue and beads for embellishment.

Project Description

About our class project

In these class project you will be making a fashion flower using simple fabrics around you while following the technique I will be showing you in the course. At the end of the project you will also be able to convert the flower to a useful accessory like brooch or hair clip when you finally get access to the pins and clips available to you.

Why these project?

I chose these class project because it is one of the easiest technique to come up with a professional beautiful looking flower even as a beginner. The brooches and the clips to be fixed at the end of the day are simple fittings that anyone can easily fix following the guidelines in the course. And most importantly are less complex accessories on increasing demand in the fashion industry. Which means you are sure to get monetary value for these course as soon as you start practicing.

To complete these project you will need to

Get your choice of material ready. Gather simple tools & materials like lighter, scissors, a measuring tape, beads etc. And most importantly keenly follow up the techniques I will show you in the course after reading the project description properly.

Final deliverable. For our class project we will be making these gorgeous flower using a basic knowledge of cutting and stitching. You're expected to be familiar with simple cutting & stitching methods. While you pay wrapped attention to how we develop these ruffle realistic looking petals.

Context. I personally chose these course because it's unique and everyone loves to try new things. Most importantly it's a simple flower making technique anyone can apply because you don't need to be an expert or use sophisticated tools. Outside a personal use of these floral accessory, these is a lucrative business idea. Making and selling breathtaking flower designs to a wide group of persons who need them.

Steps to project completion. To complete these project. You will need a simple fabric to start with, fabrics like satin, chiffon, cotton. And then simple tools like Scissors, measuring rape, needle & thread

A circular template, a fabric glue, small felt material and simple beads or buttons.

You will first make a simple paper or aluminum template using your measuring tool and scissors.
cut out the shape of your flower petals. Manipulate your circular petals with a lighter to get a ruffle effect
Assemble the petals with your needle and thread
Finish your flower properly and add finishing accessories like brooch pins & clips based on your choice.

Talking Points and Key Concepts: When it comes to fabrics for flower making you have a wide variety of choice to make. Going from, silk, Satin, chiffon, organza, polyester, cotton, felt etc. Your choice of fabric determines the appearance of your fabric. Whether opaque, shimmering, dull, sharp, shiny or transparent, rough In appearance. It also determines the treatment you will have to give your fabric. A majority of fabric frays when their edges are exposed so their could be a need of sealing their ends with a strong heat or fire. So all these determines your choice of fabric based on what is available to you. For these project we are using satin material. One of the widely available fabrics on a global level. Alternatively you can use a satin ribbon, silk, Chiffon etc all will determine your final result. You can easily find scrap pieces to use. Either from your old clothes or waste fabrics from fashion designer. For a start just make use of what you have as long as it's suitable. Feel free to ask questions if you are not sure with what tou have.

You will need a Sharp scissors & a measuring tape or ruler to cut your fabric.

Next very important tool is your flower template. A necessary tool to guide your cutting and give you consistent shapes. They could be made from Thick cardboard paper or Aluminum sheets from canned drinks. I will tell you more in the next video.

They rest of materials includes a lighter to seal the ends of your fabric piece & give it it's form depending on how you manipulate it, a needle and a thread to assemble the petals, a fabric glue to neatly hold all parts together. A centerpiece which could be already made in form or small brooches or gorgeous buttons or locally from small beads I will give you details on these as well.

Use and make Templates for your flower

Templates serves as a guide to cut out shapes for your Flowers, whether circular, square or flower shapes. With templates you won't need to measure your fabrics each time you wish to cut, because with them you have a specific measurement for each pattern of design which makes your flowers look even and professional. With them you can easily cut in bulk depending on the thickness of your fabric. Template could be made from a thick cardboard paper or an aluminum sheet usually gotten from can drinks. Choice of templates can depend on the shape to cut(paper templates are usually best for simple or regular shapes) the condition to be placed on template(whether to be exposed to heat, fire, strong force) and available materials. I usually choose between a cardboard paper or Aluminum sheet. All you need is to map out the shape & size of your design piece using a measurement tool, a pencil or a marker if you are to Draw with an aluminum sheet and a scissors for cutting you will need a marker. I will be using a circular template from a cardboard paper and I will show you how to achieve yours whether you are using an aluminum sheet or not

To form the circular template I picked a suitable bottle cap with a size that lies between. 4 inches of diameter. You can look out for a suitable size of a container or draw with a compass. Once you're done simply cut out while you carefully follow the line.

For the flower we are making we will require 21 petals to give it 3 layers and make it look full. Pay attention to the next video to see how to achieve these in few minutes.

Talking Points and Key Concepts: If you are using a cloth and wish to cut several pieces at a time all you need is to fold the fabric to a size quite bigger than your template, hold the template firmly and cut. You must not fold the fabric so thick to the point of stressing your scissors so as not to shift it's position. And you must make sure to you reduce the size of the fabric before you start trimming in exact concord to the shape of your template so as not to make a big weight of fabric to drag your scissors or the main material to deviate from it's supposed position which affects the uniformity of your petals.

Talking Points and Key Concepts: some natural flowers appear stressed or ruffle. We would like achieve that effect with our fingers and lighter. To do so simply burn the edges in bit and simultaneously try to tear each bit of edges these way once its properly sealed & tender from the heat. You can also use a candle for these job but it's important to note that candles can leave dark deposit on fabric petals so you must consider such possible effects while choosing your source of fire.

Assemble your petals with needle and thread

Talking Points and Key Concepts: Next on line is to assemble your petals to form the flower proper. These will be done in 3 stages. Each stage of arrangements will consist of different number of petals starting from the minimum number to the maximum. First we will assemble 5 petals, 7 petals and then 9 petals. All forming different layers of petals with our needle and thread which will form the flower. To do so pick up the first 5 set of petals fold each end in these manner and use your needle and thread to fasten properly especially the first petal then pick of the second piece and overlay it halfway above the first petal and stitch. Do the same thing to the 3rd to 5th petal and finally tie up the ends carefully. Set aside to the same thing to the second set of 7 petals & the last set of 9 petals. Each arrangement will give you a different size of flower. Next is to join the 3 set of flowers in an orderly manner. From the biggest to the smallest using a fabric glue. Note that you can to limit the layers of flowers to 2. It must not be 3 in number. The beauty of having more than one layer is to make your flower look rich & full. The bigger the number of layers the better the flower.

Form a centerpiece for your flower

Talking Points and Key Concepts: Centerpiece are vital to finish your flower. The only serve as embellishments in place of flower pollens. When a flower is open there must be something at the center. That's your centerpiece. You can either use artificial pollens, big fancy buttons like rhinestone or form one with your own beads. Most times it is better to form yours. because you mind not always find a suitable embellishment. So to achieve one you will lead 8 pieces of 5mm beads with the color of your choice and start to stitch each piece with a needle & thread of a suiting color. If you want to be fast you can alternatively use a reliable glue for the beads. Example B-6000 which does a good job of join fabrics to other materials.

To properly finish your flower cut out a small circular piece from a thicker or tougher fabric like felt, I am using a thick poly material. You should avoid using off colors. But can choose between the same color of your flower, green, white or black. Anything outside these will make your finishing awkward. And if you're creating more than one piece of flower. Be consistent with the flower pad. Carefully cut out with the help of a circular template so as to have a precise shape using a size that will properly cover up the open or stitched part of the flower base. Apply a glue and paste. Also paste your centerpiece as well.

Best way to fix brooch pins and clips to your flower

To fix your brooch pins & hair clip you needle to cut out a circular pad. Sure to coverup the base of the flower. Note that the first flower pad we fixed is only necessary if you've not determined the purpose of the flower or you are simply creating a floral applique that can serve different purposes. So you can simply follow these direct step immediately you're done assembling your flowers. If you're sure to turn it to another accessory with the material readily available.

To ensure a lasting & firm arrangement between the fabric and stainless pin. We won't simply paste it on the fabric. Simply cut the circular pad open. Slash open two sides at the center & pass the pin through it. And finally glue to your flower.
