“You didn’t, did you? Not really?” El asked looking up from a cluttered work desk.
“What was I supposed to do? She saw everything.”
“Where are we supposed to hide an extra body?”
“It’s a pretty big coffin. We’ll just plop ‘em both in there. Bing, bam, boom. Problem solved.” I said gesturing for emphasis.
“Good god Ethan.” she said running a hand through her hair, “Nobody else saw?”
“Nobody else saw.”
“Guess that’ll have to work.” she said pushing her chair back with a groan.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” she said not bothering to make eye contact.
The short burst of air I felt on my arm she walked past me was cold and her footsteps faded quickly. Again, I found myself alone in the office. The grandfather clock in the corner continued its relentless pace as the fire cast its red glow about the room. Six hours until morning with so much left to do.
