As I started this worshop later, I didn't have enough time to read a book entirely. I decided to illustrate The Blue Beard by Charles Perrault cover book. Of course I have chosen a B. Lucky me, it works in french (Barbe-Bleue) and english too.
After brainstorm, I collected several ideas:
• A keyhole in a blue beard
• A blue beard with a small key
• A view of foot with a key on the ground
• A mix of gold and blood
• A secret world in a blue beard
I decided to go for the beard with a little key hanging on it.
I am not new in Illustrator but definitely a newbie with lettering. Getting clean curves is not easy. It seems that I need to practice more my use of handles and anchor points placement. Jessica gives a lot of tips in the video.
I started by drawing the skeleton, then add strands around it, using flat blue. I would have liked it more bushy but I wanted the B staying legible. At the end I added the lines to make the strands visible.
I really enjoyed the process but man, being a letterer is a real job and becoming one requires lot of work ;-)
